I didn't rate Downing at Villa. At Liverpool he looks twice the player, that shows how well he has progressed. Not a bargain but a relatively good buy.

How solid our problematic left side has been made with Downing & Enrique. Pace, quality, both very strong. Downing looks worth every penny!

Have to say I was one of those that didn't think he was a good player till I saw him play for LFC.

Downing has a bit more pace than i realised and his movement off the ball has been excellent. I expected him to do well, as Liverpool have badly missed a player who can deliver a good cross from wide positions since Reira was sold.

As Truered says Downing and Enrique look to be an extremely effective proposition down the left side, which is something we have badly missed in recent years..

I never had any doubt the lad was talented, and I remember stating how I'd prefer him to Young if we had to choose one from Villa, and I'd stick to that. Glad other Liverpool fans are realising this now they get to see him week in week out!

Both him and Young are great players, but Downing just suits what Liverpool have needed for so long. A truly talented winger who can cut inside or hit the byline, with one of the best crosses in the league!

Let's hope we can just get Hazard to occupy the other wing next summer!!

Imagine when Johnson comes back. The width will be too much for opponents to handle.

Reina
Johnson Carra Agger Enrique
Gerrard Lucas Adam
Downing Kuyt Suarez

Downing Carroll Suarez/Bellamy

He had a great season last season at Villa, and that was the first season i have seen him play with ability. He was given player of the year at Villa ahead of Young.

We still get swamped with the Carroll and Henderson 'waste of money jibes' Lets hope they can come to the good to shut the plastics up. They are both still youn.

I never rated him at Boro and thought he was solid though unspectacular at Villa. Clearly he's progressed a lot over the past 3 years and I have to admit I'm more and more impressed with him so far. £20M looks like a fair fee.

He's an up and down player so let's hope he's up most of the time.

Glad to see this article I think Downing has been quality so far and unlucky not to score!!!

Good on you Stewie.

Left side:

Enrique
Adam
Downing

all left footers and it has pace, strength and passing.

He's looked very good so far but 4 games in is a bit early to start lauding him as a success, if he'd had 4 stinkers then we wouldn't be writing him off.

If he carries on the way he has then £20m seems like a fair price though

Can't believe it a month into a new season and downing's a world beater!!! do me a favour

Lets get this right he beats one player all night (not a premier player either)

And all of a sudden he's the bargain of the season

A fiver says come christmas you be asking who's Downing where did he go???

He goes it every season couple of good games then back to a best average

Take red tinted glasses off, be honest with yourselves and remember this is the same bloke who we all took the p1$$ out of last season

Agree - we're getting on at the WUMS for winding us up over Carroll, and saying 'we're only three matches in to the season, give us a break' - but then lauding Downing for playing well in those same games.

Don't get me wrong; he's looking great, but it's early days IMO...

This rant probably would've looked better if it wasn't sandwiched by two rational comments about the lad.

I agree but i had to get it off my chest it's been simmering since friday

And it is my opinion!!!

Most overated player in England set up

Thanks rant over feel better now

He's still pants though

I wasn't a fan either, I watched both him and Young at Villa and thought both of them took too many touches and overplayed when on the ball.

However it seems the move has done them both good, they both look more direct now.

Still early days, but very good start

I had quite a heated debate with my dad when we signed him, I was all for him coming as he is the type of player we needed.

Thank god I was right!

Difficult one to call this.

I think Liverpool have got themselves a decent buy - Downing's only over priced element is his Englishness, but that's the same across the board.

I do wonder how good Downing will be against top defenders and top sides though, he has always flattered to deceive imo.

Decent player though, certainly a top prem winger.

But it's not 3 games is it ?

He was the best player at Borough and the Villa fans tell us that he was their best player too.

Now at Liverpool, he is also (so far) one of the top performers.

So lets stop all this "we're only three games in" garbage. He has been producing the goods for years.

He isnt justifying anything yet. Not his price tag nor his hype.

He'll START justifying it when he puts in some match winning performances on his own .

He'll justify his fee when he helps you get 4th place and back into the CL

---------------------------------------------

Hardly, he's been a decent winger but he's been on the periphery of an England side that's been crying out for a decent left winger for years now. If he had been as good as you say he was over the last 5 years that spot would be his by now but it's not.

I like Downing but being at Liverpool will be a whole new challenge for him. So far he's done well but success at other clubs mean nothing at the moment.

If Downing continues to put in positive eye catching performances for the team then of course he is justifying the fee paid. Only a wum or a failing mystic would beg to differ.

Admittedly his Liverpool career has barely begun, but thus far he has shown his critics (of which were many on this forum) that the fee paid was a fair refection of his ability + the added premium because he is English.
