Tuition fees abolished?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That was a slip of the tongue I think. He meant grants abolished and fees introduced.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is what I meant, obviously

That's what I get for multitasking.

Sizzle, I understand your frustration - but you do need to wind it in a bit. There are plenty of people in this country who aren't racists, and to constantly tell me otherwise is pretty demoralising and fairly counterproductive.

I agree with this albeit I'm white so only really have my own experiences which doesn't make me wholly qualified to comment. Certainly my large circle of friends are not racist.

"Never forget how racist this country really is".

I grew up in the days when saying P.........shop wasn't uncommon or frowned upon.

I's say used to be, as the sign you refer to harks back to over 30 years ago and haven't been seen since. However there has been an increase in racially motivated crime following recent events, and a subsequent fear from some we are going back to those days.

Is it OK just to mix with your own kind? Should people have to mix with others if they don't want to?

What do we define as integration? How far does it go? Language, values, customs?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You only have to look at the West Indian, Indian and Pakistani migrants that came over here from the 50's onwards to understand integration does take place. However it takes time. The first generation of immigrants may initially find it harder to integrate into UK society, , but eventually do so.

I'd love to move abroad with my family, to either Italy or France, as I think it'd be great for my kids to learn more than one culture and language. But for me integration is about give and take. You immerse yourself in the local culture but you don;t lose your own national identity.. I always find it funny when people bemoan immigrants not integrating. Us Brits are the worst for that when we travel abroad, whether it's to live or on holiday. Ex-pats in Spain being the best example as well as expecting everyone to speak English.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Its all fair and well saying people don't integrate but we need to remember when the people from Asia and the carribean came over they saw signs for rooms says no blacks or Indians and when they bought houses their neighbours moved

Many I'd the so called "ghetto" areas didn't become ghettos because the immigrants wanted it that way

Where I grew up we we're 1 of about 3 immigrant households. Over 20 years it became more and more immigrant populated. Yet these immigrants were not all say Asian or carribean. They were a mix of Asian, carribean, Polish etc

In fact Prince Charles mentions this below;

Agreed, I think we are a similar age with similar experiance - my eyes are not closed to what is going on now, but I can't help feel comments like Sizzle's sometimes add fuel to the fire more than anything else.

It's a subtle, but significant, difference between "Never forget how racist this country really is" and "Never forget how racist this country can be".

The reason we have so many faiths jogging along together is the freedom to follow any God or none, that this country allows religious freedom,Halleluyah

Exactly, integration is give and take. The indigenous population has to play their part as well.

If my family did eventually move to Italy and I found the local population to be hostile to my presence I'd seek out other UK ex-pats for security.

It's fair to say people from Asia and the Carribean who came over in the 50's/60's are now integrated into our culture

I was reading that in many economies, and areas of government investment, expenditure today is comparable to that of ten years ago.

This however appears to have been completely overlooked.

Migration has been exploited as the main reason/narrative which has caused the countries’ troubles.

If the government put the required resources into public services I firmly believe there would be less resentment towards migration. However this (IMO) could only be achieved via a fairer taxation system. Which we are a considerable way away from.

One that prohibits multi-national companies and conglomerates from paying nominal or no corporation tax. Or outlaws off shore tax havens.

Something that the EU Commission (Apple in the news of late) have been trying to tackle - with little or no support from the UK mind you...
