As with all terrorist attacks, there are two dimensions. First, there's the damaged psychology of the perpetrator - the warped anger, the inability to find satisfaction or belonging in benign things. Second, there's some feed of ideology that provides a focus to the pathology. In the case of the Manchester and Borough attacks, it's the ideology that tells saddos to ignore mainstream interpretations of the Koran and that God wants you to go out and murder people. In the case of last night's attack, it's the ideology that says Muslims are evil. Those who promulgate these ideologies share some responsibility for the attacks. In the latter case, let's bear in mind that some of our tabloid newspapers - not operating in the shadows of society, but trying to spread their word as wide as possible, in search of profit - have repeatedly exaggerated Muslim sympathy for terrorism, including misrepresenting the results of opinion polls.
A certain amount of responsibility for
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just on this RR, I would strongly argue that the Internet and social media is far more culpable in the spreading of that than the mainstream media, most of which seems to be blamed without people even reading it.
I'm not arguing your sentiment as I think there is a bit of truth in it, just that the way news is consumed and opinions elevated nowadays has had a much bigger impact.

The internet is certainly a huge factor. But of course much of what get shared on social media derives from mainstream media. I'm not saying that a white nationalist who considers butchering people is radicalised purely on reading the Sun, Mail and Express. They will have their poisonous little forums where things are said that go much farther than you can publish.
However, I don't think we should underestimate the important role the tabloids create in giving extremists a sense that they are in touch with the mainstream, and responding to a legitimate need. The alarmism and exaggerations nurture this narrative of a clash of civilisations. The more mainstream the idea that Muslims are basically incompatible, basically on the terrorists side, basically want to impose Sharia law on everyone, the more people are attracted to the idea that there's a war that needs to be fought.
It's notable that the Mail's reporting of the Jo Cox murder speculated that the killer had been at risk of losing his council home to a non-British family. And today the headline in the Express doesn't call the attacker a terrorist, but does allude to the 'hate preacher' history of the mosque. We can agree, I think, both that a decent press doesn't prevent extremists from entertaining their views, and that this kind of ambivalent approach to racist violence is deeply troubling.
