Literally hundreds of MPs and peers have just received a mass email from a member of the public as follows: https://t.co/iKDQ0wyEiR
The email says:
"you want to keep your job make sure you support YOUR FUTURE PRIME MINISTER LIZ TRUSS.
She is backed by the average man. We need to be settled and working towards a bright future with fair taxes and good conduct.
The people in the street think Mp's are a joke. Please prove us wrong. Stop arguing over silly things and sort our great country out.
VOTE FO LIZ TRUSS. SHE 'S THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SORT THE COUNTRY OUT. Thank yau ftrom Average man"
Literally all the candidates seem to be offering is "low taxes".
Can they really not come up with anything else?
low taxes are the great scam of the western world
it destroys public services
actually increases the living standard gap between rich ppl and the rest of us
would rather live in a higher tax society if i knew the taxes were going to improve hospitals, school, roads, cycle lanes dramatically

The cuts need to be in VAT if everyone’s going to benefit.
An extra fiver off Income Tax a week is meaningless even if you’re on minimum wage
----------------------------------------------------------------------
a) How will you pay for it?
b) Why won't it be swallowed by an increase in inflation?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It will lower prices and increase consumer spending

Yes and that will increase demand when the demand we already have cannot be met by the pandemic affected supply chains. So all it will do is increase inflation.
Which in turn will make prices go up and not down. This is exactly what happened when the government reduced fuel duty by 5p.
don't spend ££

Larry Summers is the most public economist to say it on record. Most countries need a recession to allow supply chains to be fixed. That will kick of a new business cycle and return to growth.
Politically its not something thats nice to tell people. Only Sunak has been brave enough to even hint it. Not unexpected because is the most intelligent bloke in parliament and recognises the core problems. But whoever takes over is going to have a poison chalice. Truss etc. are way too thick to guide the country out of it.

Most can barely be arris'd to cook their own food, let alone grow it too. On our allotment site, I'd say about a third give up after less than a year, it's hard work - particularly if you're working full time too.
Business cycles work like that.
World is used to living in lockdowns and so have adjusted to operate under that reality. Now that the world is emerging out of that its going to take at least a few years to back to how things used to be done. If ever.
Thats what is causing the issue. It doesn't help that countries like Russia who are totally dependant on one form of income have created a war so that they can spend to avoid a recession but have so miscalculated that they done the exact thing they were trying to avoid.
Recession for democracies usually means a change of government. For dictators it means their whole house of cards collapses.

The current Tory leadership debate is nuts. Most are advocating reducing taxes without a jot on where the money is coming from.
One way of generating additional revenue for the public purse would be to remove some of the economic sanctions the government have imposed onto businesses

Will not help. Businesses don't produce in this country anymore. Mostly dependant on imports. And they will not invest to increase manufacturing closer to home. 'the brexit dream'. It will end up in wage increases for staff and we will end up in a wage price spiral.
The only way out is to carry on Sunak was doing. But my hope was that they suspend the energy markets like they did with money markets with quantitative easing. This country can do that because of north sea oil and gas.

In my opinion countries coming out of lockdowns at different rates is the real issue. So UK and US bounced back early which meant there was huge demand. Whereas a lot of countries incl China still have lockdowns. I don't think anyone fully understands how integrated the supply chains really are now.
On top of that I don't think its physically possible to ramp up oil production very quickly. Oil price was rock bottom during the pandemic so a lot of oil fields were capped. To get them started and flowing again, caused the initial oil shock and then Russia went nuts.

Issue is that people take allotments and then leave them to go crazy, meaning the new person who takes it over has a huge task in just getting it into a starting place again. Also, the waiting lists for allotments is crazy and kept within families etc, so those who really want them can't get them.
That said, there is a Bulgarian family who own an allotment next to my mates one and they work hard in it every day. The wife of the family grafts like crazy up there. Huge respect to them TBF.
