Agreed, is a huge task to get a spinner and fast bowler prepped to play on flat hard pitches like in Australia when in England we have nothing like that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Needed more players from Surrey. Could of made the difference.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sangakarra would have helped a lot yes.
I can't believe we're already looking to move Malan up to number 3. He's settling in nicely at 5, leave him there!
Trouble is you get a fast bowler like Mills and wood they get injured.
I still think we have agood change in England.. The likes of Overton and Toby Roland-Jones will bowl well in English conditions..
the scores will be closer that's for sure.. when you score less than 450 in both innings in Australia you deserve to lose. But 450/500 in England in both innings you have chance..
well thank god that series is over, utter garbage!
agree with a lot of whats been said but our sportsmen and women in most sports are mentally weak and fold when pressured
How quick has this series gone
Credit to Australia. Efficient and ruthless at key moments
England under-prepared and out-fought through out with the exception of the lifeless test match at the mcg.
They weren't under prepared... England don't win in Australia apart from one series.. Its to do with conditions. When we won in 2011. we had a very good spinner..Moeen |Ali is a second spinner at best.
I think all touring teams are under prepared for any series now. Playing weak teams on pitches unlike what you'll face in a series doesn't help either.
If you play your home matches on more sporting pitches, then you may be able to improve your away performances. It might also affect your home record, but I do believe it's an investment.
Problem is most team want to preserve that home record and have pitches suited to them and then complain about alien conditions abroad.
For example, if England picked more turning tracks or Asian sides picked more seaming tracks, yes it might mean your home record is affected as you are nullifying your home advantage somewhat, but it could improve how you play abroad.
I see the same thing every tour, we go in with a "let's see what happens" approach and at the end "conditions never suited us, we need to improve, we need to get better"
I find it hard to see how we will improve unless we get flatter pitches like they have in Australia
The Oval and Lords are usually quite flat and Taunton used to be a road but now it's a spinners paradise so we've got flat decks around. This is why Roland-Jones could have been good in Australia as he's used to playing regularly on a lifeless pitch. Helm is (like Garton) also someone that England are tracking closely and should hopefully get more games for Middlesex.
Surrey have Footitt who was in the England radar for a while as a quick left armer but has been completely forgotten about and is highly unlikely to feature for England now. Meaker is express pace and finally fit again but is a bit scattergun. They've obviously got the Curran brothers who are both in and around the England set up.
what has happened to reece topley
one bad fumble and hes not been seen in englands radar since.

when we won in 2011 we had some batsmen in the top order who knew which end of the bat to hold and how to build an innings. the biggest failing of this ashes has been run scoring not bowling, despite all the talk being of not having a 90mph bowler.

Plagued by injuries unfortunately. I think he was seen as a player who could develop into a genuinely quick left armer when he burst onto the scene at 17 for Essex. There's a lot of English bowlers with back problems at the moment which is a major concern.

already said this numerous times.. Cook scored over 700 runs in that series.. strauss and trot also scored massive..
Our top order won the series... Its not just England who struggle in Australia with the ball.. The wickets are flat over there. only time England put pressure on Australia was in the 4th test when we scored over 450 batting first..
Disappointed that Vince has been included for New Zealand tests, good that they're day night games but don't see the point of taking him
Ballance, Curran and Ball all not included either
I know it's not the Ashes but England have won the first ODI with Roy scoring 180 and Root 91 not out.

And Plunkett and Rashid in the wickets, I know Test cricket is different but still it would have been interesting to see how they would have done in the Ashes
All about the ODI series now, Ashes are gone and this is the big one... If only.
Late wobble from England in the first game but a superb knock from Roy who came out hard before reigning it in a bit when Bairstow and Hales went in consecutive overs. Wonderful partnership with Root who made sure he was there at the end and did a great job finishing the game.
I'm surprised we've brought Hales into the team at 3 but I guess he was doing well before losing his place midway through the WI series for something of which he's now been cleared of.
Hopefully we get to see Butler do something special in this series, it's been a while.
In regards to the bowling, we've actually got 2 genuine quick bowlers with Woakes backing them up with decent pace, an offie and a leggie. Stokes back in the top 6 and a 6th bowling option offers even more balance and variety.
Hopefully we can claim the 5-0!
Managed to catch up with the ODI game, lovely knock from Jason Roy especially the clipped effort between his legs, sublime shot.
Wood and Plunkett bowling at 90mph was nice to see
Its easy to bowl 90mph when you only have 10 overs in 3 spells.
