Wow, I thought Leach would hit the winning runs there, well I thought Overton would but after the maiden, it seemed destined for Leach to do it.

Surrey are most likely going to end up with 22 points so will take a lead of 43 points going into the final 3 games with their next game against Worcestershire. It's done.

Essex of last season vs Surrey of this season would be a great match though.
...........
Yes it would.
Having Cook back after the tests will hopefully get the batting back on track a bit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep, he might not be the rock he has been for the last few years for England but he's not lost the consistent run scoring in the games he's played for Essex during that time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In fact, I've just seen that he's signed a 3 year deal.

Surrey will wrap this up before tea.
5 down at lunch so it'll be over quickly after lunch, might see Ravi try and get a few quick runs.
England unchanged for the 5th Test, I'm rather surprised.
I thought Rashid was a certain to miss out as he barely bowled in Southampton
Looks like Bairstow will be keeping too.
I guess they want to continue this façade that Moeen is "the second spinner" especially if he's moving up to 3.

do you think there's any truth in that moeen plays better with a 2nd spinner as there's less pressure on him? weird to select Rashid who like you said barely bowled

Looks like Moeen is the 1st choice spinner. Leg spinners are a luxury in test cricket - they're useful when there is a huge score posted so they have runs to play with but with this current England side they just get to 250ish, Rashid is pretty inconsistent so don't feel he has much use in the team apart from his lower order batting...

but the amount he bowls joe root could probably be just as effective, its strange why you wouldn't just stack another front line batsmen in there
I think its pretty evident Rashid will play in Sri-lanka so hes been picked for another test.
Not sure why we need 6 bowlers. in the team.but hey the ECB know what they are doing

I can understand 2 spinners playing in Asia but there's no point doing it in England, as Kaz said would have just gone for the extra batsman as this is the weakest point in the side.

Strange, it's as if you can see what the selectors can't.
I have no idea what's going through their heads**, they could have used this test as a chance to blood Rory Burns and stick him in the top 3. I'd have seriously considered moving Cook down to 3 for this test as he's retiring so it would mean he gets to walk out by himself which would get a positive response from the crowd just for him.
I don't believe Jennings is the man but he's going to get a few more tests so could have opened him with Burns to give them one test opening together before the winter with slightly less pressure on them with the series won. Slightly.
**Well I do, they clearly think Moeen can do a job at 3. I would love it if he can but he loves a waft outside off stump.
Come on Ravi, smash a few more and don't let them get the innings win.
Essex now lead by 1 run Well played Ravi Bopara with decent support from Pepper, Porter and now Cook.
Every run scored now is another run Surrey need to chase
Down goes the final wicket, Surrey need 2 to win.
However they have taken tea so will have to wait it out a bit longer.

Are you being serious? Why would you take a tea break when it's 2 runs to win...
Cricket can be a very frustrating sport at times
There would've been a wait during the changeover anyway.
Imagine if we didn't win this
