With those type of forward passes from midfield, the forwards must have been tearing their hair out. Hardly surprising that we didn't score many from open play
It’s a pity Winks was crocked , he could have made a difference, I expect great things from this lad next season.
"Stones was the major culprit on the winner, he went to sleep.
Re the actual article _ I would agree with the OP up to a point but Hendo shouldn't be singled out.
He really isn't good enough to be England's main CM but there aren't a lot of alternatives right now. He cannot control and dictate a game and that is what was required. He would do better in a midfield 4 with a more technically gifted player alongside him leaving Hendo to do the water carrying."

I agree with this.
Truth is England have no world class midfielders.
Can't win a WC without them!
In the days when England could win a World Cup, we had the Charltons.
Here's what I'm talking about:

The OX, Clyne, Milner and Lallana were all massive misses and in the end cost England a place in the world cup final.
Imagine:
Kane Vardy
Lallana
Milner Henderson OX Clyne
Maguire Stones Walker
Butland
I think this article is spot on to be honest. Amazed by the amount of bites from others. No question England need a few better centre midfielders. The first thing I I do when I play Fifa and choose England is immediately take Henderson out of the starting 11 and put him in reserves. I've been doing that for many years.

Can’t argue with this, Henderson needed a creative player alongside him, not in front of him
Hendo is a defensive midfielder, that’s it.
Wtf is going on with these reply’s ffs
KLS
Hendo is in the squad to contain and close, cover the gaps in the lines and break up and pass the ball to other players
I think he had a brilliant tournament, did everything asked of him, but he tried too hard. Needed to keep simple play. Had he had a Modric next to him he’d have that out ball. Alli and Lingard not those players

He was massively let down GR8 the system facked him over. I feel for him because he’s won me over personally. His drive and fitness and determination was far in excess of others around him
Brilliant tournament
The standards are so low man
For a player so limited he was excellent in a midfield role alone, he did the work of two players
I play CM and when you have two infront who’s role is to attack and support the striker it’s a lonely place
Tripper was brilliant
Maguire was brilliant
Neither was exceptional
Clearly you see football through different eyes and off the back of a montage of Henderson’s poor passing and panicking
Sure if there was a montage of him closing and chasing down balls and doing the dog work they’d be a difference of opinions
Each to their own
Not all Liverpool fans think he's had a good WC. I know exactly his limitations and I'm not surprised.

Henderson was ok at the world cup, nothing more. But Southgate’s set up really didn’t help him it has to be said.
We have no one that can play next to him
I like RLC but I’m not sure he is the man to play CM
Ox maybe?

Fully agree with you.
He’s not the best player in the world but you know what you get and you’ll always get it 100%.
To ask him to play in midfield on his own doing the work of 2 players was unfair and idiots banging on about how poor he was is silly.

Probem was Hendo is a water-carrier but we lacked the quality player to give the water to and use it. Hardly his fault if he's put in a role that is beyong his limited talents.

Pretty much what I said earlier. It's incredibly tough getting the ball with the other two central "midfielders" 10 yards ahead of you all the time. It massively limits your options and also means you're going to be closed down easier meaning that you'll often only have a pass sideways or back.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The whole point of the system is to find the sides from deep, in order for the wing backs to cross to Kane. It's hardly surprising that he's either passing sideways to them or trying to hit them from distance. That's what his role was. If that isn't on, then he keeps it safe and plays to the centre backs and one steps up,bringing the ball into midfield as the free man, creating space for a pass to the attackers.
If people can't see that, having watched several games in quick succession then they'll never see it. Some people just don't understand what they see.
Except he was incapable of doing that when the opposition put pressure on him. Nothing to do with 'understanding' it or not, how pretentious. If there was a player near him he would simply hoof the ball upfield, even Southgate commented on the lack of composure from the team, of which Henderson was by far the worst culprit imo
