I can't remember exactly what happened but from the brief info available on wikipedia, the sequence of events seems odd.
ON LOAN
11/12 he's top scorer with 18 goals
ON A CONTRACT
12/13 5 goals in 25 games
13/14 AVB had him training with the reserves at the start of the season. Sherwood comes in and brings him back into the team. He finishes top scorer with 14 from 25 games
14/15 2 goals in 13 games
15/16 not included in the 1st team squads. contract terminated a year early after player sought £5m payout
Adebayor was class when he needed a new contract, and a lazy, unprofessional priick the rest of the time. I seem to recall he did exactly the same at Arsenal and City.
He had some really good patches for Spurs for sure
Best lb for lb signing has to be Bale, Shirley
Just one more thing re Ndombele, Gil etc
Fully understand why people would have Ndombele as their least favourite, or most disappointing Spurs player. But worst ever signing? I just don't see it. For me that means a player who contributed nothing to Spurs as a player - someone who simply wasn't worth the shirt, ever.
Like it or not, for a while Ndombele WAS worth his place in the team, and he won the team some points. Obviously he was nowhere near worth the money and he is a facking unlikeable waster, but he simply did more in a Spurs shirt than several others (like Gil and Spence, to name a couple)

As a club owned player though he scored 21 goals over a 5 year contract when he was (I think by far) the highest paid player at the club.

Yeah but you're very close to just saying the worst player to play for the club at that point. Worst Signing has to involve money and expectations vs reality to make sense as a convo
Like Gilberto clearly never had the ability to play for us. Khumalo similar. But they're not going to be in the Worst Signing convo

I notice Bryan Gil is up for sale not a loan. feckin right
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The fecking Weetabix Man.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Worst Spurs signing in the past 20 years
----------------------------------------------------------------------
no chance.
not even the worst signing in the current squad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pound for pound (no pun intended) Ndombele is obviously the worst signing in our history. Record signing (still) and biggest flop.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Strong disagree. Spurs got a decent season out of Ndombele, 91 total games and 10 goals. Nowhere near what was hoped obviously, and he's still near the bottom of the pile for sure, but Gil has fewer than half the games (41) and precisely zero goals. Certainly nothing close to a decent season.
Obviously the focus is on Ndombele because of the price tag, but FFS, Gil cost £20m plus Lamela before going back to Sevilla on loan the year after.
I really don't get why Gil gets such an easy ride. He's been an absolute facking disaster. He's cost a fortune, barely played and when he has featured he's produced literally nothing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wait what? 91 appearances and 10 goals? No chance Ndombele played 91 times for Spurs.
He was here for three seasons before he started this series of loans, played 63 times got 6 goals and 5 assists, cost £53m on extortionate wages and has been a complete waste of facking space and time. We’ve had some reasonably big priced flops over the years but at least the others I can think of flopped while trying, Ndombele hasn’t even done that. You will never convince me this guy hasn’t been our worst ever signing, there is no case for the defence.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I mean
The stats are straight off Transfermarkt, and I literally just did make the case for the defence
But sure, let's exaggerate for dramatic effect
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lots of sources I’ve looked at state 63 games. 91 seems like a lot. Don’t think he played a minute under Poch did he, because of being injured when he arrived? Jose used him, but he was on out here 18 months and Conte didn’t fancy him. I’d be amazed if he played 91 games but even if he did, he’s been a waste of time and space nonetheless.
I used to offer some mitigation for the guy; he was young and coming to a new country, the coach he signed for got sacked straight away and we brought in managers that played a style that didn’t really suit his game. But it’s coming up on 5 years now, you cross reference the fee with the wages with the expectation with the actual return and it’s been an unmitigated disaster. The thing with Gil is, he’s not all that. Ndombele actually has a lot of ability which makes his situation even worse.
Abebayor was on £170k a week 10 years ago
And he was such a lazy surfer we didn't even bother including him in the 1st team squad
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2431201-emmanuel-adebayor-has-reportedly-earned-34m-since-his-last-tottenham-start>
34 should be 3.4
Agree with all of that Bales/Ace
Still seeing it as a simple question of who has been the worst in a Spurs shirt. For me, a player who offered a bit, even if sporadically/disappointingly, is still better than a player who offered literally nothing even if expectations weren't as high.
It's not like Gil/Spence were bought with the expectation that they'd do nothing. People had high hopes for both.
P.s. I'm getting the stats from here https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tanguy-ndombele/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/450936
63 might be league games maybe

With the benefit of hindsight, I'm looking at it from terms of impact on the club. Signing a player that you expect to be a key member of the first team for years (and so we gave them a contract accordingly) who turn out to be useless and worthless is pretty much the worst situation. Cos you have a massively depreciating asset that you HAVE to replace, usually by spending a ton of money again.
It's why J's got a point with Adebayor. If Kane and Poch hadn't come along that'd have really facked us worse than it did.
Few honourable mentions
Soldado
Jansen
N’Jie
Bentley
Sigurdsson (completely forgot he played for us tbh)
Adebayor is a curious case though isn't he. Cos when he could be aaarsed he was absolutely quality. Absolutely all or nothing with him. And definitely nothing more often than all.
Ko Itakura’s release clause in summer is €10-15m.

Yeah Son's a great shout. Hugo too if we're going longevity
Was gonna say Lloris.
Alderweireld, Walker, even Alli - all great deals

We got Lloris, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Rose, Walker, Eriksen, Dembele, Dele, Son and Kane for a total of £92m.
Summer of 2012 we bought Hugo, Verts and Dembele for about £37m, great transfer window.
Considering how good Soldado was before Spurs, he was maddeningly crap
Dele at £5m, produced great numbers for 3 seasons. Such a shame.
