Morning tbab

For what it's worth, I think here in the UK at least, we have progressed amazingly in terms of systemic racism. To the extent where I believe we have the necessary accountability and legal protections in place to ensure that it never rears its head again. In terms of acts of racism and discrimination at least (speech and thoughts are much trickier to control).

To date, the vast majority of racism I have experienced in my everyday life (and that's not a lot, mind) has been by the "common man", not from people or groups in power. I actually think the "system" has been a really positive force for me, in terms of getting me to realise my own talents and self-worth. Ultimately I feel it's brought me up, not kept me down. And that's no surprise to me, because the "system" is not some kind of faceless, evil entity. It's a collection of ideas and practices that are informed by the individual people who make it up. And those individual people are by and large very decent and fair.

It's probably a different story in the US, but that's my experience in the UK at least.

“ which I could list countless examples of from experience”

That’s not my experience btw I’m white. But just things I’ve seen working in boozers over the years.

A bloke refusing to leave at closing because a black lad I worked with had told him we were shut.

Another bloke approaching a white lad I worked with and telling him “to shave because his beard made him look like a muzzy”

These weren’t isolated incidents they are fairly regular and the list is endless. Although we are fortunate enough to live in a country where next to no lives are at risk on a day to day basis due to criminal policing, to say racism isn’t really present here is inherently wrong imo.

In answer to renoog I think it’s a bit of both. The mainstream media so their best to create division from the top. And racism is passed on generationally from the bottom, often in areas where there is little integration I would guess.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My Facebook feed is full of 'All Lives Matter', 'look at this white bloke getting beat up by a black bloke', 'if you don't like it go back to Africa' etc.

Yes racism has been on the decline for a couple of decades but it is still prevalent, and I'd say there has been a recent rise and social media is where people show their true colours behind a computer screen.

Many of these people claim they aren't racist they're just standing up for their country.

The irony of it all is..

The UK really isn't that racist. I don't think I've ever seen, witnessed and rarely read of hate crime in a white on black context. It's certainly not that much more than black on white from what I can think off the top of my head.

These protests are trying to be decisive. They are trying to drive a wedge, creating an US vs them mentality. And the left wing mugs are lapping it up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

UK is better than a lot of places in that respect. But work in a boozer for a couple years and you will see it is still is still a huge problem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nobody suggests racism is gone....but black people are not being shot dead Every day in the UK.

Protestors saying that just make the cause look silly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Eh? I was replying to a direct comment which said the UK isn’t that racist. And I’ve acknowledged things are better here than many other places, but it’s still a deep routed societal problem which I could list countless examples of from experience. I’ve not once mentioned anything about black people being shot here every day so I’m not sure of the relevance of what you’re saying to my post.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok.

My post referenced others posts too.

Chill.

Just this morning I've had people sharing something like below, from a page called Leave.EU.

In 1833 the British government used 40% of its national budget to buy freedom for all slaves. This wasnt paid off until 2015, meaning we all paid through our taxes, to abolish slavery. Racist Britain?

People are actually that stupid that they share this, to claim they aren't racist.

People are being indoctrinated by social media and it has got to dangerous levels.

This is so, so ignorant.

When will people realise that the biggest challenges around prejudice and racism are difficult to identify?

Subtle differences in treatment.

It baffles me that people that still don't understand this and to suggest there's just as much racism 'in return' is a moronic thing to day, frankly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi there.

I think it is difficult for people such as myself who are white in a 99% white area of the UK or Ireland or America to really get it, on racism.

Hypothetically, we would have to be black for a week or year to see and feel what it's really like.

Am not being funny or trying to trivialize.

Lol. The history of the UK was going around the globe moving and displacing people. On a serious level I don’t really like generalising, but it amazes me it’s usually the people so proud of our history that also don’t like the fact generations after we went around forcing global migration (still do this tbf but that’s another conversation for another day) some of those people have come to settle here. They really need to start teaching the history of the Empire in school.

Racism against white people exists also.

I’m addition if you live abroad for a time then you will experience a similar thing as you will be the minority.

However racism is everywhere, my family in Morocco are black, from my grandma side, and have faced racial abuse. My dad has face racial abuse by Arabs who didn’t know he could speak Arabic but then when they knew he could after he confronted them, they apologised. There’s racism to black people in Asian and Arab communities too.

My mum is an English white women and my great gran did not approve to her marrying my father due to how he looked.

Black people have been persecuted for generations by many nations.

I agree, but a huge section of the right don't because they seem to think it'll be politicised and made to look evil. Well, parts of the Empire was very evil. Why would you want to whitewash that?

I would've paid more attention in history at school to learn about the country I was brought up in, especially when it came to the huge mistakes made in the Middle East after the fall of the Ottoman Empire (Sykes-Picot) than how many prossies Jack the Ripper dismembered.

Firstly it’s not exclusively about the UK at all.

I think the impression that it gives is that racism against white people exists also. If I wanted to give another impression I would have used different and/more words.

You are trying to put words into my mouth, it’s obvious, pathetic and childish.

I expected more from you given how you had acted previously, perhaps that was my mistake.

I hope not. But you can see why people get so frustrated when at a time when black people are suffering people come along and try to dilute the problem with examples of ‘hey, white people suffer too".

It’s not helpful in the slightest. Not saying you’re coming at this debate from a sinister place but surely you can accept that a lot of people who bring that straw man into the debate are trying to drown out the voices with poor comparisons.
