Some promising comments from Kompany on the lad, whilst in charge of him at Burnley. Sounded very excited about him....he has been playing with some of the best in the world so you'd hope he knew what he was talking about...

Speaking about Odobert while in charge of Burnley last season, Kompany insisted the young winger was way better than he was being allowed to show.

“I will almost refrain from what I really think about him, because at this moment in time, I don’t think people realise how good he is,” he said at the time.

“He’s still playing in a team that is playing for survival, but the things he’s able to do, whether it’s defending or whether it’s attacking…like I said I will refrain from what I really think because I don’t want to jinx it, I don’t want to create a situation where the expectations become too big for him too soon.

“He’s in the right place right now with us, that’s absolutely the right step. He’s getting the right game time he needs for his development.

“But we will have fond memories of him in five or six years’ time when we have this conversation again.”

Decent signing, I like it a lot. Some people are very down because they wanted mainly big name marquee signings, and I do get that. So much talk of Neto, Eze etc..and so I can see why some would feel underwhelmed by this. I think he looks really great and his value will probably skyrocket in the next couple of years.

But I do wonder if we haven't quite got the balance of 'building for the future vs improving us now' right. But the window is still open so we'll see.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that's the general problem. We already had a young squad but this must make us easily the youngest squad in the league. Alan Hansen was right. You can't win anything with kids. You need experience around them to develop them properly. Bringing in the likes of Gray, Bergvall and Yang meant we should have been looking at experienced marquee talents like Eze and Neto to take the headlines and let the youngsters develop without pressure. Now we're pinning our hopes entirely on them.

Why?

Because they're cheaper and THAT is why Levy wants them. Although saying that, this one isn't all that cheap so I'm not sure why we're spuffing so much on players no one outside of Turf Moor has remotely heard of.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a bit odd to reference the infamous Hansen quote which was proven to be completely wrong. And you may not have heard of him, but plenty have.

If he ends up being our final signing this window, then I agree it's a bit underwhelming overall. But I don't think he will be.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No it wasn't. It's a complete fallacy. United had Bruce, Pallister, Irwin, Keane, Cantona and McClair in their first 11 that season. They won because they blended youth alongside these lads. Even the class of 92 have admitted they wouldn't have won a thing without the support of the experienced lads around them.

Weird how most people agree the relatively cheaper/younger signings usually end up being Spurs' best buys

And the big-money high-rep ones end up being the biggest flops

AND everyone agrees the likes of Gray and Bergvall look incredibly promising already

...but every time there's a young, relatively cheaper signing, people bemoan the fact that it's not a big-money, high-rep one

Overall I'm ok with the window. If we can get a bit more cover in defence then great.

I was never expecting us to go to town cause we kind of did that last summer. The brunt of this window was about removing the deadwood and bringing in another striker/adding quality up front. That was our priority position. Werner is a meh signing but looking at this new guy I'd probably already give him a shot ahead of Werner.

The ball is more in Ange's court for how this season pans out. Obviously the defence failed last season despite the personnel being good. If it's the same and it lets us down again, that is on Ange.

That’s it, embrace mediocrity Phillip.

Yeah it is weird how it works out that way...

At least there is a strategy now, whether it's right or not time will tell.

At least we are buying players to fit our style of play. Just would have liked a marquee signing or two to send out a message as to what we want to be, other than what Danny rose used to say about having to Google who the latest signing actually was!

Vicario -27
Romero - 26
Davies - 31
Bissouma - 27
Maddison - 27
Son - 32
Solanke - 27
Richarlison - 27

We have experience.

we did sign an expensive marquee experienced talent though

I think you have clinical depression or something fridge you seem absolutely incapable of finding the positives in any situation with spurs at the minute
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it's tenuous to call Solanke a marquee signing. For me a marquee signing is someone who has proven year after year their pedigree. Maddison was a marquee signing. Eze or Neto, given the number of years they've been producing, would have been marquee signings. Solanke, for all his supposed fit has had one season where he's scored 19 Prem goals. His previous best was 6. For me it still comes with some risk so I'm not as all in on that one as others might be. When Maddison signed I knew what he was going to bring. I'm unsure on Solanke because he might have just been perfect for Iraola and Bournemouth. He might be perfect but we just don't know that yet so I'd hesitate to call him a marquee signing with one good season under his belt. I'm more convinced by the ceiling's of Bergvall and Gray to be honest.

Desperate for Ange to do well... I really like him, he's got personality, doesn't talk in riddles and is positive in his approach. He represents the club well.

Is his style too open ? Yes.

Are we likely to be successful against the best teams in Europe playing this way - no, not likely.

But it's exciting, young talent being bought and coming through the youth system, playing on the front door is much better than Conte, mourinho ball.

I'm not on board with bashing Ange. Not sure why Sizz is so anti-Ange as he hasn't had long enough to be judged fully yet. I hope to god he gets it right and obviously I'll back the signings he wants to make. I just hope he's fully on board with these current signings and he's not just been handed cheap alternatives to his first choices.

I think we could def be more proactive in the market i see somebody say realistically who can we buy to improve. I would argue mamardashvili is light years better than Vicario just as one example. Not saying do it but there are deals out there.

posted on 16/8/24

All I will say is that if the form at the back end of last year continues deep into this year, he'll be in trouble because what got us 5th last year was that form in the first 10 games. That was title winning form. The final 28 games I think saw us produce results that would have put us around 10th. Levy won't put up with that so improvements have to be made. He can shake his head from the sidelines all he wants but if the results don't pick up, the buck will eventually stop with him.

This is fresh season though. The only thing that worries me is the cheap nature of the goals we gave away to Bayern, suggest we've not leant a thing from last year.

he's a 19 year old who had 19 starts as a 17 year old in Ligue 1 and then 25 starts as a 18 year old in the Prem last season

it's a similar bet we made with Udogie Sarr and Gray in terms of going after teenagers who have played a lot of mens football

it's quite hard to assess him when he's exclusively played for teams that have gotten relegated but he's clearly very technical and a good dribbler and can play on either side

I think it's a bit underwhelming given I think we needed someone with a bit more pedigree to come on and properly displace Brennan but it's the kind of signing that has served us well recently and I think our recruitment team has earned a bit of trust
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That I understand but for every Udogie or Sarr, there's a Solomon, who this kid reminds me of.

I'm absolutely staggered at the fee because even when you play for a relegated team in the Prem, there's usually something you see on MOTD where you're like "blimey, he's a bit good" but I've never even heard of his name. Not even close. Now for 30m at 19 wouldn't you expect people to have noticed his talents already. Not one pundit has called him out for shining.

Sorry to put a dampener on things but those are the facts. There's a temptation from all fans to skew to the positive with things like this in order to make it more palatable but if you take the right marker, any average player can give you remarkable stats if you ensure your vantage point flatters them. Sky do it all the time to push the narrative pundits are outlining.

I might be proved wrong here but l can't even see a youtube clip that tells me this lad is anything other than a squad player, destined for the subs bench.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Fridge had to google him...so that means he's no good.

Perhaps you should head up our scouting and recruiting depts.

Those first 10 games of last season was the best and most enjoyable form we've had since peak Poch for me. I'd like to think Ange can get that back somehow but there is the worry that teams have figured us out or he's lost whatever it was in the team that made that run as good as it was.
