It's interesting how perceptions change. Because we've signed the likes of Bergvall and Yang for a relatively cheap sum and then Gray for a little more, everyone seems to believe this is a masterstroke of data analysis. What separates this deal from Georges Kévin N'Koudou or Gedon Fernandes? Nothing much. We might be signing a baller but to me he's a complete unknown so we can't assuming this kid is anything other than a cheap alternative to Neto. I think Levy really gets away with it at times. Particularly when it was confirmed by O'Keefe that we bid 40m + Skipp for Neto so we clearly wanted him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a definite change from the club though, previously it would be one punt young player, now we’re signing a whole raft of them - it seems to be a new strategy at least.
Bergvall has looked good, Moore could be generational, Gray looks very good.
It’s always easier getting behind young players and for me personally this is the way forward for the club as we are not going to try and compete financially by buying the £100m players like Arsenal did. The other thing with us these days is that we don’t get bullied into selling anymore - generally we keep the players that turn good and get the most out of them before selling on
seriously if you're bringing up Nkoudou who was signed what like a decade ago rather than Udogie and Sarr then you're clearly trying to come to a certain conclusion
Ultimately, there is just one signing who will slot into the team. Apart from that, it will be the same team as last season, so we will need to have sharpened tactically and worked out how to defend set pieces.

throwing his toys out the pram and wanting him gone a few months into his first season just show he's an attention seeker who should be ignored
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wanting him gone is harsh. He always needed more than just a season, but he has no credit in the bank. I wouldn't give him any for getting us in Europe cause that was pretty much the minimum he could have done in the circumstances. Form needs to picked up on end of last season's form and quickly. We've spent money, we have a good squad...there are little excuses. 3 wins from the first 5 games is what we should be looking at.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No credit in the bank......feck me Spurs fans are a tough gig.
Fans need to just show some faith...far too much short term knee-jerking game by game.
The trajectory needs to be upwards, it was last season in almost every respect, and needs to continue this. How we do relative to others should almost be ignored, focussing on our performances and results and see where that takes us.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hard to say the trajectory was upwards with how we finished the season with 5 losses in 7 and losing out on top 4, despite it being the only thing we had to focus on by January. It's not even like our style of play was any good then either, something we had hoped would improve as the season went on.
So yes, it needs to be put back on track this season. If that form continues early into this season then there is no hiding for Ange and he will rightly face enormous scrutiny and be under pressure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We definitely regressed as the season went on. I think that's why some fans don't have a great deal of optimism going into the new season. Many of the performances why pretty abysmal.
If the season was reversed and we finished the way we started, i'd be more confident now.
Like someone said earlier, he earned credit in the bank from the opening 10 games, which were then used up in the last 28 games.
Hopefully we can hit the ground running again and maintain that level throughout the season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that's a pretty fair assessment of things. With Poch we were poor or inconsistent for the first half that first season and then things started to slowly improve so the progress felt linear. Under Ange, as you say, it was the other way around which is cause for concern but we'll just have to see how we go. If this season starts as the previous one ended you have to assume the problem is tactical and will likely see him sacked before xmas.

5th place - improvement

more goals scored - improvement
more wins - improvement
European qualification - improvement
2 points off 4th - improvement
worse defence - needs work
Form & results ebb and flow over a season. Overall, the trajectory was positive even if at times fomr was poor but the reasons for that were many and not as simple as just tactics or injuries etc
As i said, less over reaction game on game and more of an overall consideration of the direction of travel is needed....look at Chelsea, or consider if our season happened in reverse.
We can expect and demand improvement, absolutely! but on here we see toys being thrown out of a pram before even half time, people losing their shiiiit before games even finished, let alone seeing how things pan out over weeks or months,

That's all well and good but we didn't have any European football either for the first time in a long time. I was confident it was going to be an improved season on last season from that fact alone. The way the season unravelled after the first 10 games wasn't exactly a cause for positivity. I mean those 10 games are the reason we finished as high as we did. You forgot to mention that our cup performances were worse. Without European football I was expecting at least a good cup run.
I think it's fair if we expect more pressure to be put on Ange should this season not start out well.

Cheap, and that’s the main consideration

How do you define cheap? Would anything above 20m count as cheap in your opinion?
