Cry more.

The more sane and rational Devonshire understands reality "The proof will be in what they actually deliver by 2029." Wetting your panties after one budget, grow up,
Things can only get better.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
🤣…And when you’re faced with the “reality” of the here and now you’re just gonna go on about “2029” and tell people to “grow up” and “cry more” because you haven’t got an answer for what they’ve said
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I appreciate you've been bewitched by populist liars and that you want instant, you want now, you want immediate but that's now how it works in the real world, you don't overturn 14 years of inept governance in 4 months.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's all very well pointing at the last Govt, but what is THIS Government doing about achieving growth.

We've already had 2 poor growth periods since they come in as business and individuals sit tight to see how they are going to be hit in the budget after a summer of doom and glom messages from the Govt, about pain, black holes, tough decisions.

While long term sustainable growth takes time, there is also a need to get the economy moving NOW. They cannot just sit there waiting for some of the impact on infrastructure investment to kick in in 3, 4 5+ years time.

They have afforded big spending this time by raising taxes but they will need to be increasing tax receipts through growth of the economy and peoples wages if they are to balance things going forward and be able to spend more on public services.

What measures do you see that will help kick start the economy now?

I consult for a firm who I was employed by for over 15 years, currently employing 36 staff, full and part time. Speaking with the Senior Partner he estimates the NI raise will add at least £30k to the wage bill. They need to fill 2 position ideally but have currently put that on hold as it becomes a risk if we see any down turn and its too early to tell whether that is likely or not. The prospect of rising inflation and sticky interest rates adds to the uncertainty.

This will be repeated across the country. SMEs make up about 60% of the private sector work force so it is a massive part of the economy.

I think its completely rational to point to the last 4 governments (since 2010) who have barely scratched positive growth figures in the 14 years in power and who saddled us, the country, with 40% more debt since Alister Darling was Chancellor (from about 60% to near enough 100%) .
I understand the desire of Conservatives to shift the focus onto the new lot, but they have a f***ing cheek, imo, to demand immediate anything after the state they've left the country in.
None of us have seen the actual state of the country's accounts but I'm gonna give Reeves the benefit of the doubt (You pair aren't and that completely fine) that just being in the door she wants to stop the rot and get some money in before starting her and Labour's own agenda.

I'm sure you'll pick apart the above, I'm no accountant, as you've probably gathered, but using the example of that firm who's wage bill has increased, doesn't the onus then also fall on them, as has been demanded by every conservative in the last decade, to improve their productivity? The Tories loved to point out how unproductive The UK is.

I reserve the right to change my mind in future budgets but I personally see this one as a book balancing effort rather than anything else,.

Oh come along, yes debt has soared but that has fundamentally been a result of bailing out the banks and country post-credit crisis and then spending huge sums in dealing with the Covid crisis, when at one point the Govt were paying more than half the working populations wages.

Labour rock up and all we hear about is the black hole....fair enough, there was a shortfall. But if this is going to be the drum you keep banging, then at least have regard to the circumstances the Labour Govt handed over in 2010 and the covid crisis. These are what have driven up debt and taxes.

In the context of stagnant global growth (bar China), imagine where our debt would be had austerity actually been a borrow and spend strategy.

As for Reeves, she comes across as a very competent chancellor and i have no issue with her whatsoever.

What I am judging on is what they have offered businesses now, what they have done to back up their priority of growth which underpins all of their borrowing and spending, and I see almost nothing there other than additional costs.

I'm not calling for her head and am prepared to see over time what is delivered, but right now they have given nothing for business owners to feel positive about and when that happens, business owners will tend to sit on their money rather than risk greater investment - this will therefore not drive growth, investment, wage growth, profitability all of which is necessary to fund planned spending on public services.

I appreciate you've 100% bought into the Johnsonian fantasy world of politics and economics where wishful thinking and a command of ancient english gets the job done, alas that's not reality.
Sometimes, you have to get your hands dirty and do unpopular things for better longer term outcomes.

But again you are ignoring what happened in the last Parliament.

Your comments lack any context and thus come across as blinkered and spinning of facts to suit your narrative.

COVID is estimated to have costed up to £410bn. The freezing of the tax thresholds is a direct result of that, a necessary evil, but one that effectively lowers living standards. The global inflation crisis off the back of COVID again erodes living standards.

How these events are dealt with can be criticised but these events were happening regardless, just like the credit crisis under the Labour Govt.

If you don't show any balance in your spewings about the last Government, your views just come across as ill-informed. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but one that ignores facts is the definition of stupidity.

We're in a dreadful state, yes partially thanks to Covid, but mainly because of gross mismanagement of the economy by then party if fiscal responsibility that borrowed at high rates to pay for the day to day rather than make hard decisions and even now you're wanting sweeties immediately fuxsake

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The fact that you call it sweeties shows you have no understanding of the economy and in particular SMEs who are the life blood of it.

If you tax and borrow to pay for stuff, then you'll need to do it all again in 6 months, 1 year, to afford the public spending plans, unless you grow the economy.

If the economy does not grow much in the next 12 months, then they will find themselves with the same shortfalls and have unaffordable spending plans.

It is vital that growth is achieved in the short term and planned for in the long term...this isn't "sweeties" this is the ability of businesses to employ more staff, to expand, to invest, to pay their staff more. This then boosts the economy.

Are you saying growth isn't important now?

Forecast 1.5% growth for 2025 ok with you?

posted 1 week, 4 days ago

In footballing terms, what Labour have done so far is like new owners coming into a club, and their plans to achieve this involve putting in plans for a new stadium, borrowing massively to deliver it in +5 years time, not investing in the current team, giving the training ground a lick of paint, the lowest paid members of staff get a pay rise and raising ticket prices.

It's a very confused strategy which ignores the immediate needs to deliver success.

"UK interest rates could take longer to fall after the Bank of England forecast that inflation will creep higher after last week's Budget." (BBC)

This is good news for no one other than those fortunate enough to have substantial savings.

Dev, Hector won’t get it, he’s too busy yapping about 3-5yrs down the line!

Yup Interest rates not falling, higher inflation and lower pay rises due to the NIC increase but Labour said it wouldn’t take from the working class!
