Genuine question and not at the WUM but can any of the Christians explain how the Christians who believe that the Earth is only 6000yrs old and there were no dinosaurs? (I get it's not all Christians btw)

This discourse today has brought that to my memory and I honestly just wonder how they explain it?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm Christian, and I do not believe what you have just said.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It is mainly the evangelical dumb fecks that think that I believe. And believe me, there are many many of them.

Christmas may have began as a religious celebration but it sure as shat isn't viewed that way by many now so why are we pretending it is?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We’re not. We’re just saying without religion you’d have no Christmas. It wouldn’t exist.

It’s also an.event atheists for eg have continued to embrace because they like it so much. Sure they’ve dispensed with the meaning and origins - but they don’t want to stop doing it. That’s basically taking the bits you like out of religion and getting rid of the stuff you don’t

Basically in a round about way - everyone’s a bit of hypocrite
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd probably rather give up receiving a Dairy Milk in a sock once a year to let a few million Jews live in the 1940s.

You are essentially saying, "Yes, millions and millions of people have been murdered because of religion, but you are forgetting that you get some carboard tasting chocolate coins once a year because of religion, I don't see you complaining about that"

That's your argument.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

A few billion people still hold Christmas close to their hearts.

It's more than just a few bits of chocolate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Justifying the holocaust because I get some pigs and blankets now are we?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well they'd never eat them...

Ok, on what way? There are those who don't think Dinosaurs were about etc but is yours a differing belief? Not trying to wind you up genuinely curious
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe God created everything, I also believe in evolution.

But God is the ultimate creator. Billions of years ago.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, sounds logical.

Hmmm, how about some green shat that keeps leaves, meh maybe some can lose leaves, hmmm, better have diseases to feck those trees up, oh and make some of them toxic or poisonous, actually hold on, lets have these green things change colour, maybe even bloom with colourful things with like, I dunno, petals i think we shall call them, man this game is fun, what shall I make tomorrow.

Religion deserves mocking whilst it still plays such a large role in our society. When it is with the Roald Dahl books on the shelf and has the same impact on our society as Roald Dahl books, then it will be in the right place and will be respected as such. Where it rightly belongs.

Millions and millions of people have been murdered full stop. WW2 for example was not religiously motivated. As covered on this thread Hitler was a proponent of Darwinism, he wasn’t on a crusade from God and neither was Stalin. To lay the holocaust at the foot of organised religion is bizarre. What I will say is the Catholic Church facilitated and helped the Naazis and are a disgrace for doing so.

On the second point - I’m not saying we should turn a blind eye to the evils of SOME religious organisations because religion gave us Christmas. I’m pointing out the hypocrisy of atheists who have taken what they want out of religion (the holidays and festivals) while mocking others for having a faith

Exactly.

Not once have I mocked anyone on here for not having faith, in fact I have commended them for it, told them thats their choice, yet I have been mocked and insulted on a few occasions, just because I have my faith.

The member on here who made the original post has a very valid point, and we should discuss it and give our thoughts.

Unfortunately I do not think the OP realized that he was making a valid point and just wanted to have a pop at Christianity, then other like mined people jumped on the bandwagon. Which is fair enough, I just wanted point out their hypocrisy, even though they do not like it.

I am not saying that though. Please read through all my comments, I have engaged with the OP.

People who have misused their authority in religion need to be made to answer for it, and that goes for everything all the corrupt stuff and starting wars in the name of religion.

What I am saying, is the people on here who want nothing to do with religion are fine to do so, but do not be a hypocrite and celebrate religious holidays and then try and justify it by saying that said holidays have lost all religious meaning, because guess what ? They haven't.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To you maybe, for the majority in the UK it's about a Wispa Gold in an old sock and fighting during a game of monopoly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Which is fine. I have no arguments over that. If that is what people see it as, then thats their thing.

But to totally dismiss religion as the spawn of everything that is bad in life is also wrong.

If people are against religion, then do not have Wispa golds and play monopoly during the festive period, as without religion, there would not be a festive period.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The reason the entire western world celebrates Christmas on 25th December is because Emporer Constantine fused the pagan ritual of Saturnalia with the birth of Christ to unify the Christians and the pagans

Then over centuries other winter traditions from Scandinavia etc got borrowed and mixed in. But the reason we celebrate Christmas on 25th and exchange gifts is because of the deliberate decision Constantine made

What's Tannenbaum?
Yule logs? Is that the religious pagan festival?
What are these cultures that weren't religious?
