When you lie on your death bed and contemplate an eternity of ceasing to be, you might wish you had some faith that there is something beyond and that may give you some comfort that death isnt the end.

That is the essence of religion to me, and that fear has been manipulated and exploited more than anything else in human history, but that is what it boils down to IMO.

I am therefore not critical of those who have faith, it is their choice and in the vast majority of cases it results in many positive life choices. But as with any large institution, if there is no real accountability and independent oversight, bad shiiit will happen and will be covered up.

Others will say that teaching their children religious values as a protection against things like teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, anxiety and depression etc etc

I’m not saying they are right or wrong and there are plenty of clearly harmful examples of religious indoctrination but the biggest threat I see is this age we are living in where people are now making sweeping generalisations about other sections of society

It’s not as simple as all religion is bad based on your experience

What stance? I’m not a member of any church. I’m simply saying that people who post hate speech against religion would usually never dare to say it openly. They hide behind anonymity.

Ultimately I believe hating on any section of society is wrong. The comments I’ve seen on here such as the suggestion that the world would be a better place if religious people were ‘eliminated’ are shocking
