Comment on BBC:
"At this tournament we saw the limit of Southgate’s ability as a manager - we did not see the limit of what this group of players can achieve."
Pretty much nail on the head.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I half agree - we also just don't have several crucial types of players you often need to win international football tournaments.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Could have won 2 - 1 was 100% down to the manager and we were the better team, and 1 the manager was partially at fault and we narrowly lost to the best team in the tournament. We were also a whisker away from a WC final - so the players are there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think there's more reason to that for our inability to control games.
Everyone mocked Southgate saying we miss Kalvin Phillips, but what we do miss is the Modric, Jorginho, Rodri/Zubimendi type of midfielder that controls games and ensures we keep the ball. Our passivity is more than a mindset issue imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeh but that will happen though when we set up too defensively. Don't need Mainoo and Rice as 4s. We had huge gaps in MF cos we were too worried about defence. Also you gotta question personal or tactics as we were constantly stretched down our right. Saka was no where to be seen and walker was constantly on toast. Cucu on the other hand played it perfectly and had team mates covering
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree and disagree, Southgate's game management is poor, but his problem is not relatively conservative line ups.
I don't think the issue is Mainoo and Rice, most top teams have a regista and a destroyer - Mainoo is just a bit raw still.
I do agree he missed that Walker was flagging until it was too late and Southgate has not found the balance in attack and we lack cohesion.

Had a good tournament but helped by Spain defending as a team.
Don’t think I’ve seen him hit a cross of that quality for Chelsea lol. Couldn’t believe it
Genuinely didn't see Morata as captain material and now he's lifting a trophy for his country
Foden is a better player than Olmo, Williams, or Lamal but looked very average - that's partly on him but it's also because we don't attack as a team at all.
I also think Pickford could have done better for the winner.
He sort of committed by charging out but then he wasn’t able to reach the cross, so ended up in no man’s land.
If he stood his ground, realising he wasn’t going to block the cross, he could’ve saved it by guarding the near post.

Foden was crap the entire tournament. The fact that he played so much without his place even being questioned is pretty damning of Southgate. And surprisingly there’s not been as much scrutiny for that. Unlike when Mount was the scapegoat.

Pep - City etc
All of the threat was coming down the right with Saka.
Meanwhile on the left with Bellingham and Foden there was zero threat. Should’ve tried a direct winger on that side as well, like Gordon.

Love that guy. Always thought he was a good character but he was so bad at the start. Glad he’s found his feet.
Stubborn Southgate was never going to make the required changes for this Final. He stuck with the same players that quite honestly haven't been good enough in attack and it cost us in the Final. Spain are there for the taking if you get at them and we have plenty of top attacking players like Palmer and Watkins who could and probably should have started tonight. Not to mention the likes of Gordon, Eze and Bowen who were all horribly underused this tournament. Gordon in particular could have been such a potent weapon down the left.

He played well first half 45mins, also played in wrong position too many times
All this time I thought Gordon was the forgotten man, totally overlooked.
But Bowen was the true forgotten man as I legit didn’t even think of him lol.
Yeah just took him to make the numbers
Southgate has tunnel vision. But like not the great kind that keeps you concentrated. The bad kind that doesn’t let you see all of your options. A one way tunnel.
Anyway I feel at peace with today. A better manager could have made it closer, but ultimately they lost to the best team. Despite the easy draw, getting to the final was a good achievement. Palmer and Cucu got moments to shine on the big stage.
Hopefully the new manager will be able to finish the job and most importantly be proactive.

I don't feel at peace at all. That's two Euro Finals in a row where we haven't been able to get over the line. Extremely frustrating and I'm tired of seeing all these other European nations having their time in the sun except us. Even Greece have won a Euro ffs.

Yeah I remember that, tells you everything you need to know about know it all Neville. I find most of the pundits on TV quite useless. You get more insight on here tbh.
Most goals conceded have been on Walker’s side. I know Trent is bad defensively but you wonder if he would have been any worse.
