Why do people always think we are far behind Chelsea and Man U for? both are not all that. Just because they are 9-10 points ahead of us this season it doesn't mean they are miles ahead of us. We will be up there next season challenging both for a top 4 spot and we should be aiming to finish above both of them or at least one of them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thing with Chelsea is they've got where they are with a bit of siege mentality/project youth/ Lampard magic
Maybe the new signings will upset the balance but it's a maybe, I expect them to be better with the signings
Utd could easily go back to the other type of Ole teams we've seen

If we outspend everyone bar the oligarch clubs then they should expect top 4
But to spend less with a manager in his first full season and expect 4th is a bit strong tbh... Though you know if we're in a position where we just need to beat one of Palace or Brighton at home and he fluffs it it will look different

You have to view it on what Arteta is given to work with and not the money wasted on Sanchez, Ozil etc
The net spend is poor IMO because we traditionally failed to get full value on sales rather than throwing money about
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't expect Arteta to come out and say he's got loads of money.
a) it heaps pressure on himself
b) it means all the fees of our targets go up.
The issue is however we are loss making club while we are out of the CL. And the longer that carries on less likely we will have money to spend. So Arteta does have to get more out of the players he has. One reason why is we cannot shift them especially with Covid hitting finances.
The fact is we finished 1 point and 1 game away from CL positions last season. And this season our results have generally improved under Arteta. I agree that Emery was the reason why we weren't performing at the start of this season. So why shouldn't we expect Arteta to get us there. Surly if he is the right man for the job then he has to do the job?

I've already explained why to you in my comment.
We are starting from a position of significant disadvantage compared to the other clubs.
We also do not know how much money he will get this Summer but based on reports, it will not be a lot. So the recruitment has to be on point and that is not an easy thing to get done, as we have seen.
He should absolutely be looking to get us back into the Champions League spots, but he cannot be expected to yet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What would you call progress then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
J99, do you actually read my posts? I've said to you he needs to challenge for the CL spots. We failed to do that this season when most of our rivals were shocking. This cannot happen again.
Assuming we get Europa League football, we need to progress far in that competition too. It's inexcusable to get knocked out in the RO16 by Olympiakos when we were in control of the tie. Especially as we'd made the semi-finals and the final in our previous 2 years in the competition.
And another cup run would be nice.
Look, I want us to get CL football. Badly. But you're essentially saying he should be expected to overachieve - this is not reasonable. Our expectations should be realistic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
look if you think Emery was the reason why we were underperforming then our performance level with these players should already be challenging for the Champions League with another manager. So I am not expecting Arteta to over achieve. I am saying he is better than average manager. Which is why he was appointed with so much risk. He has no experience to speak of to get such a top job.
If you think its all the players fault then how can you blame Emery and why was he fired?

No, the blame does not have to be binary. You can attribute the blame to both the players and the manager. It doesn't need to be one or the other.
I still don't think our current squad is that amazing overall. But you can get them to perform better if you're a good man manager, with a clear identity and structure that have the players' buy-in, and they can understand what you want from them coherently. However, there are still caveats to this because there's only so much you can do with a limited group of players.
So if he largely has the same squad that he's got from this season for next campaign, it's unreasonable to expect him to get CL football.

Arteta has to achieve Champions League qualification next season.
=====
No he does not. City, Liverpool, Chelsea and United are all in positions to spend more money than us and their squads are in better shape than ours.
We cannot expect to finish in the CL spots if they're starting from a position of significant advantage ahead of us.
What I want to see is for us to challenge for those spots and see clear progress.
If we get CL football, then great, that's an incredible achievement. He shouldn't be under pressure to get it though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Then whats the point of Arteta? The aim I assume is to challenge for the title? We cannot do that while we are out of the Champions League. It stops us in our financing and we cannot attract the best players who can enable us to challenge for trophies.
I've shown recently that we spend money like CL team and we also pay wages like a CL team. So why can't I expect Arteta to improve us to CL level by end of next season?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh FFS man, 'I've shown recently that we spend money like CL team and we also pay wages like a CL team.'
Have you paid literally no attention to comments by the management, board and owners this season?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
for ffs. Its the same every club. The only reason why Chelsea are spending is because they haven't been before and are in the CL. We are not in the Cl nor do we have any match day income that usually allows us to match Chelsea's spending.
Why the feck appoint Arteta if you do not think he can improve this team. A team made up of CL calibre players. You are already lowering expectations of Arteta.
A team made up of CL calibre players?!
Whoa, when did you change your tune on that one?
"The only reason why Chelsea are spending is because they haven't been before and are in the CL. We are not in the Cl nor do we have any match day income that usually allows us to match Chelsea's spending."
No this is not the only reason, they got £110m for Hazard and £70m for Morata. That's on top of whatever their existing transfer budget was going to be having finished 3rd and winning the EL the previous year.
If we could get hefty fees for our players, that would certainly help us a lot on the transfers front. But we haven't. We need to do better when selling.
"A team made up of CL calibre players"
This team is not CL quality, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest this is the case.

With respect we are not Everton. These players got to the final of the Europa last season and finished 5th. And we have just got the FA Cup final.
Do you honestly think that we wouldn't have been challenging Man Utd and Chelsea for 4th? Do you really think we are worse than Leicester and Wolves?

Not at all. We are paying those wages. So those players will be replaced by similar wages.
Getting rid of Ozil alone £18m, gets you 2 or 3 CL wages players.
J99, we were very fortunate last season too though. Our xGA (expected goals against) was anticipated to be a lot higher and our conversion rate was unusually high - I read somewhere that it was the highest conversion rate since Opta records began recording or something like that. This was never going to be sustainable and that became clearer when the start of 2019/2020 season happened.
Finishing 5th and getting battered 4-1 in a EL final says to me we aren't a CL team because if we were, neither of those things would have happened. A team is more than just talent; mentality comes into it too. We crumbled under pressure. So we're not a CL calibre team.
The BBC are running the above. Erm we were only really 'in the mix' due to other clubs' deficiencies, rather than due to our strength. Once a few others got their shiiit together, the writing was on the wall for us. To the degree that, when Arteta finally took over, there were some legitimate concerns of a relegation battle this season.

Oh I'm not denying we're paying CL wages. No, not at all. But it's players like Mustafi, Kolasinac and that German bloke who used to play for us that are picking them up.
If we replace one of these guys with 2-3 players that improve the level of the team, without impacting on the wage bill to much, then yeah, bring it on.

No this is not the only reason, they got £110m for Hazard and £70m for Morata. That's on top of whatever their existing transfer budget was going to be having finished 3rd and winning the EL the previous year.
If we could get hefty fees for our players, that would certainly help us a lot on the transfers front. But we haven't. We need to do better when selling.
"A team made up of CL calibre players"
This team is not CL quality, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest this is the case.

If you think its all the players fault then how can you blame Emery and why was he fired?
=======
----------------------------------------------------------------------
With respect we are not Everton. These players got to the final of the Europa last season and finished 5th. And we have just got the FA Cup final.
Do you honestly think that we wouldn't have been challenging Man Utd and Chelsea for 4th? Do you really think we are worse than Leicester and Wolves?

We were in the mix with Wenger and Emery. Yes we missed out. But we weren't finishing in the bottom half of the table.

I didn't fit any current players into the team and most of my knowledge on the players before the 80s is based on a history of Liverpool book I had read a couple of times before being forced to write it out, front to back, for coming home stoned when I was 15. It went something like this - "your eyes look funny". "oh I'm just tired". "what did you do with the money I gave you?" "I bought Chinese food." "so you don't want your dinner?". "I do, I'm starving!". "aha, you've been on the wacky!"

Erm we were only really 'in the mix' due to other clubs' deficiencies, rather than due to our strength. Once a few others got their shiiit together, the writing was on the wall for us. To the degree that, when Arteta finally took over, there were some legitimate concerns of a relegation battle this season.

Where have I said we should be finishing in the bottom half of the table? Not being a CL quality side does not instantly mean we're a midtable side.

How the hell have you come to that conclusion? This is why I ask whether you even bother reading my posts or not.
I've already answered this for you above.
Either read my posts properly or don't bother replying.
