I though Gerrard's best years were under Rafa, personally.

No he didn't. That's just something rival fans have made up and ran with. Simply Rafa wanted ultimately to emulate the system he had at Valencia with two HOLDING midfielders, I capitalised the word holding there to make it easier for you, one being a breaker of play and one a deep laying playmaker. He then required an attacking midfielder, behind the striker, where Gerrard played.

I love when rival fans run with the Rafa didn't trust Gerrard in midfield as if Rafa used the old British 4-4-2 classic when in actual fact he didn't play with a midfield two, apart from his first year and where did Gerrard play when he used it? That's right, in the midfield two and we won the CL that season with Gerrard getting player of the tournament. But don't let facts get in yhe way of a good long running made up myth, it has lasted this long with the idiots sucking it up. Why stop now?

I think there's been so many exceptional midfielders that the top 5 really comes down to personal preference.

Don't worry, i'm no great Liverpool fan but United supporters just like to wum (especially MuDD) Liverpool fans about Gerrard. Deep down he doesn't believe what he's writing. Gerrard was a great midfielder and will be missed in the PL. I reckon he'll do really well in the MLS.

I'm just a big fan of Lampard. His performance levels have been so high for so long and is still doing it. I wouldn't quite say he's underrated but should always IMO be higher in these kind of polls. Scoring 20 goals from CM for 10 seasons straight is pretty impressive. But like you say, there are so many great players in there an argument can be made for any of them.

There is a piece in the Inedependant today saying that Gerrard never wants to face LFC in a game and wont be going to another PL team.

Hmm, looking at the stats it's not quite 20 goals a season for 10 seasons. Still pretty good stats though.

There might, from an slightly-less-than-impartial point of view, be cause to smirk...

At his peak he was one if the best players in the world. He's a player capable of producing extraordinary performance.. well he was .
He carried us to extraordinary heights when we were just an average team.

Poor Frank, scratching around for a living after being cast off by Chelsea. Having to score against the team he loves just to pay the rent. I feel for footballers.

The thing about Gerrard was that you always expected him to find a way to win the game. Even at 1-0 down going into the last minutes you always anticipated him making something happen if he picked up the ball within 40 yards of goal.

I always remember those 2 goals against West Ham.

Like I said on another thread.. The club let Gerrard down.

There were only 2/3 players of has calibre playing alongside him during his years at the club..

Torres, Alonso and Suarez (albeit Gerrard was slowing down then)
