The thing about Gerrard was that you always expected him to find a way to win the game. Even at 1-0 down going into the last minutes you always anticipated him making something happen if he picked up the ball within 40 yards of goal.
I always remember those 2 goals against West Ham.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That one he scored against West Ham was unbelievable. To even attempt that, so late in the game, it just felt like, I'm not having this, I'm gonna get us back in the game. You felt that as a Liverpool supporter at all times, that he would do that. It's somewhat heartbreaking that at the end of games when we're losing, he's still trying to do it but just doesn't have that part of his game anymore.
You'll see rivals opinions of Gerrard gradually change for the better now that he's moving on and when he retires the opinions will all be of high praise. I saw that happen with Scholes, who was never rated anywhere near the best midfielder of Premier League years but suddenly after he retired, he was number one in the eyes of many.
Like I said on another thread.. The club let Gerrard down
-
I agree. A massive disservice not letting him join United
To be honest, Liverpool were always just two or three quality players from being an exceptional team. Gerrard, Torres, Alonso and Mascherano – a top class core by any standard. Carragher and Hyppia were also quality. I think it’s cruel that your emerging team will in my opinion prove to be your best of the last 15 years if you can keep Sturridge fit and find 2 decent CBs and a GK.

I'm surprised you put Lampard over Vieira and Gerrard though - despite his phenomenal goal record.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm just a big fan of Lampard. His performance levels have been so high for so long and is still doing it. I wouldn't quite say he's underrated but should always IMO be higher in these kind of polls. Scoring 20 goals from CM for 10 seasons straight is pretty impressive.
-----------------------------
Lampard didn't usually play as a CM really Robb. For most of his career at Chelsea he played behind a striker with 2 CMs behind him - he was more of a no.10 than a CM. Still a great player though.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
No he didn't. That's just something rival fans have made up and ran with. Simply Rafa wanted ultimately to emulate the system he had at Valencia with two HOLDING midfielders, I capitalised the word holding there to make it easier for you, one being a breaker of play and one a deep laying playmaker. He then required an attacking midfielder, behind the striker, where Gerrard played.
-----------------------
In my opinion Gerrard was at his best when playing as the SS in behind Torres. They were a truly frightening partnership. If you dropped deep, you left the space for Gerrard to push into and possibly unleash a thunderbolt. If you pushed up to squeeze the space then the pace and movement of Torres meant you were wide open for Gerrard to slip him through. They were very difficult to defend against.

I don't know. I sometimes think, is this guy being serious or just on the WUM and I genuinely think most are being serious about Gerrard.
I even find it strange when it came to England, in tournaments, apart from the last one, he was always in the top performers, yet he was regarded as being the worst. I even remember him making team of the tournament and yet he was still crap. It's crazy. Rooney basically gets the same treatment from imbeciles and he's even gets it from United fans, playing for United, whereby he'll be amongst your top performers, every single season, scoring goals, busting a gut and yet he's been crap and should be sold. It's crazy.
Some players just get praise and some don't, no matter how good they are.
I watched a show on Giggs yesterday and the guy was exceptional. He also stayed at one club his whole career, scored goals, has the highest assists the league has ever seen and was just an exceptional player but you can bet in twenty years he'll never get the praise that others get, like Scholes, who has been elevated for example. The same with Keane, I find it mind-boggling to think that any United fan, or any fan for that matter can place Scholes above Keane. Maybe they don't like his personality and that distorts their view, I don't know.

scholes at number 1?
whilst he had many great qualities as a footballer, there is one essential quality that is required of a midfielder that he was, frankly, abysmal at. tackling.
his standard of tackling must preclude him from being included in the top 10. his other qualities offset this flaw to a great extent, and do make him one of the best midfielders the premiership has seen, but not in the top 10.
to be in the top 10, you can be a bit weaker on some aspects, but you can't be completely devoid of ability (by professional standards) in any one aspect, and even the most blinkered of man united fans would admit that scholes couldn't deliberately make a clean tackle.

I agree he was at his best then but that was simply because he was then into his peak years, he'd have been at his best in midfield also, if he'd played there, or wide right, where he played and scored a career high in a season. He could have played anywhere at his peak. That partnership was just fantastic as Torres' runs were exceptional and Gerrard's understanding of where he would run made it work. He was phenomenal last season.
I think that coming so close last season has had a huge detrimental affect on him mentally. No matter how strong willed you are – and he certainly is/was – what he went through with the game against Chelsea and then the Palace game, coming so close to that elusive title – and to be fair Liverpool deserved to win it last year as the standout entertainment in the league – cannot be underestimated.
I think, like when we lost to Madrid in the CL (Fergie’s response), Gerrard knew he’d lost his one last chance at it.
Gotta feel for him really, as far as you can have sympathy for someone whose reached the pinnacle of doing a dream job for most of us for 15 years and garnering worldwide admiration..

I think that the position really suited his best attributes. He had the pace and drive to burst into any space ahead of him and really power his team forwards. I think that receiving the ball in between the lines really gave him the chance to get at teams. Sometimes in the congested midfield he wasn't always able to hurt the opposition as much with his pace and drive.
They really were a frightening partnership.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gerrard controlled the pace of many games, especially as he got older, last season being the freshest example, whereby he controlled most games we played from a deep position and got nominated for Player of the Year doing it.
Simply Gerrard had it all, could do anything, whilst some excelled at a few abilities and lacked others. Keane was the closest to this in the Premier League era with Vieira not far behind him. Toure is probably the best current example of this.

getting back to the original list.
scholes at number 1?
whilst he had many great qualities as a footballer, there is one essential quality that is required of a midfielder that he was, frankly, abysmal at. tackling.
his standard of tackling must preclude him from being included in the top 10. his other qualities offset this flaw to a great extent, and do make him one of the best midfielders the premiership has seen, but not in the top 10.
to be in the top 10, you can be a bit weaker on some aspects, but you can't be completely devoid of ability (by professional standards) in any one aspect, and even the most blinkered of man united fans would admit that scholes couldn't deliberately make a clean tackle.
---------------------------------
You can't just take one ability and make it the deciding factor. Gerrard couldn't control the pace of the game, therefore he can't be included. Keane couldn't volley, therefore he can't be included. Petit wasn't fast enough therefore he can't be included. Its daft.
