I have often seen, when the pace of the game is fairly slow, Gerrard trying to force the game and giving away possession needlessly.
-
But that was one of his key strenghts - forcing opponents to change their game.
In 2005 in 45 minutes he destroyed Kaka, Gattuso, Pirlo and Seedorf on his lonesome.
----------------------------------------
No he didn't. He had a great second half, no doubt about that. But you are greatly overlooking the influence of Hamann in that game. He was the one that controlled the game for Liverpool. The way the AC players came out in the second half was criminal as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hamann didn't control the game at all, he simply stopped Milan controlling the game as he broke up their play and moved the ball on, for Gerrard to take control of the game, which he did, winning him Man of the Match and ultimately Player of the Tournament. Think he won third best player in the world that year also.

Better than last year in my opinion. If you had those two last year in there, you'll have walked the league.

Naysmith and Jagielka. But I don't think Gerrard was a particularly malicious player on the whole. He just wanted to win. I don't mind a player who puts his all into a tackle every now and then.
In no way does it detract from Gerrard - or Scholes for that matter - being absolute class.
Gerrard was a better player than both Mascherano and Alonso.
The latter two couldn't do what Gerrard did in an advanced position.

That's terrible logic - multiple England managers shifted Scholes to make space for Lampard and Gerrard - a move which has often been criticised.
Also, you also neglect to take in to account the fact that moving Gerrard to behind Torres gave Liverpool their most deadly front line for around 5 years...

Two footed stamp against Everton? Naysmith was it?
Being not as good as 2 of the better CMs of the last decade, worldwide, is hardly a stick to beat someone with.
That's the one. Don't ever remember Scholes doing anything like that.
The worst Gerrard tackle I saw was on Le Saux on the last day of the season at SB.

Gerrard was played there because of his superb creativity. Probably the best in the world at that stage. Torres can testify.
Last season we played a single holding midfielder who provided all round defensive cover and creativity from deep position. Alonso and Masch are two holding midfielders and couldn't fit into how we played last season.
Ah right the poor Scholes who can't be judged for his tackling because he was so bad at it, also can't be judged on his football because he was quiet and unassuming. People forget that Gerrard is also a quiet family man who on the whole, throughout his career has kept himself to himself, concentrating on his football.
Scholes has the trophies, for the fantastic teams he was involved in, granted, Gerrard has the individual honours to show that he was one of the best players in the world and certainly the Premier League era and he has these honours whilst playing. Scholes got elevation once he retired.

Can't disagree with that. Probably didn't help that he was ginger - who'd put him on their magazine over Giggs or Becks?
Scholes was one of the standout players in a series of phenomenal teams, whereas Gerrard was the standout player in a series of pretty average teams who over-achieved because he was so good.
However, if Gerrard had been at United, I'm not so sure he would've garnered the same reputation because he wouldn't have needed to become the same player. He would've been - like Scholes - in the shadow of Giggs, Beckham, Cantona, Ronaldo, Rooney.
In many ways, Liverpool's shortcomings were one of Gerrard's strengths because it drove him to become a better player.

Sorry TOOR, that is a terrible comment.
No one is saying 'don't judge Scholes on his tackling' just pointing out that he can still be the best midfielder of the PL era despite that. It's the one terrible aspect of his game - everything else you'd want in a midfielder he had. The comment about judging him on his football because of his nature just has no logical basis whatsoever.
Personal honours mean far, far less than actual trophies won. Giggs won loads of personal honours despite never being the best player in the league. For example - Tony Pulis won last year's manager of the year, does that make him a top manager? No, it's just a recognition of what he did relative to the level of the club he was at.
You've also listed Liverpool top goal scorer, world's most popular footballer and goal of the season ffs.

You hardly ever saw Scholes interviewed and he didn't do any promotion that I am aware of. Gerrard was more outgoing with the media, as you'd expect from a captain and also did more on the advertising side of things. He had a lot more exposure and these things do influence people. It is essentially marketing.

Simple question really, can anyone see Paul Scholes moving position because of Mascherano and Alonso? Not in a million years in my book.

That's terrible logic - multiple England managers shifted Scholes to make space for Lampard and Gerrard - a move which has often been criticised.
Also, you also neglect to take in to account the fact that moving Gerrard to behind Torres gave Liverpool their most deadly front line for around 5 years...

Who is this guy speaking about Scholes' nasty tackles. I don't ever remember Scholes commuting a challenge as bad as one of Gerrards tackles. I remember the tackle but can't remember who against.

"Scholes controlled games from advanced positions, as well as from deeper positions later in his career. "
As did Gerrard, ask some of the best midfielders in the world what it was like as Gerrard BECAME the game and pulled Liverpool past some of the best teams with players like Traore and Biscan in the first XI.
In fact have a little look at this little lot who faced or played with him.
“Gerrard has been my idol for 10 years and is one of the best players in the world. He is the example of what all midfield players aspire to.”
-Daniele De Rossi
“I love Gerrard’s qualities as a player and a leader. Technically and tactically he is the best. He is a player who fans can identify themselves with and a man who carries the love for his club on his club badge. There is not another player in the world who combines all those qualities.”
-Guus Hiddink
“An excellent player in my opinion, he is a modern player because he is a player who runs, marks, knows how to pass, cross, score goals and he is a leader on the field for Liverpool. So he is a player I would like to have in my team.”
-Kaka
“I remember in the Champions League final comeback by Liverpool against AC Milan, you saw him up front, on the wings, and a moment later he was back, marking the playmaker, I have never seen such a complete midfielder.”
-Claudio Marchisio
“For me, in the position he plays, he is one of the very best in the world. For the job he performs, for me he is one of the greatest.”
-Ronaldinho
“Steven Gerrard would be the captain of my World XI dream team.”
-Francesco Totti
“I can’t think of a striker in the world who has scored as many important goals, never mind a midfielder.”
-Thierry Henry
“The biggest compliment I can give to him is he is second only to Zinedine Zidane in terms of his world-class status.”
-Michael Owen
“Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Messi and Ronaldo but yes, I think he just might be.”
-Zinedine Zidane
“He has become the most influential player in England bar none. Not that Vieira lacks anything, but Gerrard does more.”
-Sir Alex Ferguson
-----------------------
I'm not doubting his ability TOOR. I just think that Scholes was better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So why does Gerrard have so many more individual honours and was third in the world at one stage but Scholes doesn't and wasn't?

In fact Gerrard:-

Scholes was quiet and unassuming - he wasn't flash enough for the PL era. I don't have a problem with him not winning many personal honours and I sure that he doesn't either. He has the trophies to show how good he was.

No he played as an attacking midfielder to provide creatively for Torres. Gerrard made Torres one of the best in the world.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly, that did not answer my question. Second, let's cut the nonsense mate, he was moved from that position because those two were better than him there. That midfield of Liverpool was very solid, i'll go as far as say nearly world class. Better than last year in my opinion. If you had those two last year in there, you'll have walked the league.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gerrard was played there because of his superb creativity.
