As Liverpool fans we had nothing but respect for United legends Scholes and Giggs. Gerrard raises a different type of emotion. Maybe they didn't like how good he was..
------------------------------
I don't think that they like his character. He has done a few things that rankle. One of the things that got my goat was him going on about divers and how he'd speak to anyone at his club that did it. Yet he dived a fair few times himself. He seemed to get away with elbowing people quite a bit as well.

scholes at number 1?
whilst he had many great qualities as a footballer, there is one essential quality that is required of a midfielder that he was, frankly, abysmal at. tackling.
his standard of tackling must preclude him from being included in the top 10. his other qualities offset this flaw to a great extent, and do make him one of the best midfielders the premiership has seen, but not in the top 10.
to be in the top 10, you can be a bit weaker on some aspects, but you can't be completely devoid of ability (by professional standards) in any one aspect, and even the most blinkered of man united fans would admit that scholes couldn't deliberately make a clean tackle.
---------------------------------
You can't just take one ability and make it the deciding factor. Gerrard couldn't control the pace of the game, therefore he can't be included. Keane couldn't volley, therefore he can't be included. Petit wasn't fast enough therefore he can't be included. Its daft.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gerrard controlled the pace of many games, especially as he got older, last season being the freshest example, whereby he controlled most games we played from a deep position and got nominated for Player of the Year doing it.
Simply Gerrard had it all, could do anything, whilst some excelled at a few abilities and lacked others. Keane was the closest to this in the Premier League era with Vieira not far behind him. Toure is probably the best current example of this.
--------------------------------
That wasn't really my point TOOR. Just saying that you can't take one flaw in a players game and then rule him out of the running because of it. Almost all players have flaws, but can still be great despite that fact.
I think there's always an element of nostalgia when someone moves on. I mean look at Everton, 13th, 4 points off relegation zone, 5 defeats in 6. I bet they wish they still had 'the awful Moyes' who guaranteed them top 8 every year.

I agree to an extent but there becomes a point, for me, if you use a wider scope, increasing the years, whereby you simply can't put in players who are great at a few things and not at others, especially when talking about midfielders. You're left with players who had it all. Certainly for me, taking the Premier League era, Scholes gets in the top ten, however if you added an extra ten years, he wouldn't, in my opinion.
My favourite ever player, an absolute legend and the best midfielder, along with Roy Keane, I've ever seen, just my biased opinion but that's how I feel about Stevie.
So many times he did it when it mattered, from despair to joy with the swing of that right boot, so many examples to list.
I really hope we can win something this year for Stevie, the final game he could potentially play for us is the FA cup final on 30th May, his birthday.........

I'm surprised you put Lampard over Vieira and Gerrard though - despite his phenomenal goal record.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm just a big fan of Lampard. His performance levels have been so high for so long and is still doing it. I wouldn't quite say he's underrated but should always IMO be higher in these kind of polls. Scoring 20 goals from CM for 10 seasons straight is pretty impressive. But like you say, there are so many great players in there an argument can be made for any of them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree, though "pretty impressive" should read "absolutely phenomenal"...no one else in the PL has done that, and without using google I would challenge you to name a single English midfielder who has ever done that.
Gerrard was lauded for his versatility - he can play right-back, he can tackle etc - yet if you ask anyone to name his career highlights it will come down to goals (vs Milan, West Ham etc), not to an amazing tackle, or a beautiful cross, or his running of the game from central midfield....because, frankly, he was better at scoring goals than doing the other stuff.
Whereas Lampard is somehow dismissed as "just a scorer of scruffy goals" - ignoring the way he is a much smarter short passer for instance than Gerrard - and Gerrard's goals are seen as emblematic of the man, whereas Lampard's (of which there are many more, both at club and international level) are ignored. Everyone - the media especially - remembers Gerrard's goal vs Milan, people forget Lampard's vs United, just because Liverpool won on penalties, Chelsea lost.
To me Lampard is the really phenomenal player, as he is still showing.
Just out of interest, is there nobody here that rates Keane as your best midfielder of the Premier League era? I find it astounding that he isn't. I feel it may be due to personal issues with him and not playing ability. I'm ashamed to admit it but Keane was my secret favourite player for years. He was bloody Souness reincarnated.

Perhaps the DJ incident also has something to do with it? Having seen the video of the incident, I genuinely thought that he would be found guilty. Obviously I don't know all the details, but I find it hard to believe his defence of self-defence. It was 2 on 1 and the DJ never made a move to hit Gerrard or anything. I can't help but feel that an ordinary man would have been found guilty in that situation.
Scholes wasnt as good as Stevie G, even though he is a top player, he was never a natural leader and was very prone to malicious sneaky tackles.

He never got outplayed and schooled by Pirlo like Gerrard and Lampard did. Those two at the top level were found wanting because they could not control a game doing what they are suppose to.
Paul Scholes controlled and single handed set the tempo of games even with the likes of Ronaldo and Rooney at the helm. It takes a special, special type of player to do that.

Gotta say, he certainly mastered the star fish...
Fantastic player, but he's made the mistake a few players have and stayed that 1 season too long. We had it with Rio last season. Still capable of a performance, but so far removed from his best it is laughable.
Certainly gets in to any top 10 in the PL era, and you could argue a case for him being in any of the top 5 spots. He score some absolutely vital, and top quality goals, and, while many see him as just a 'Hollywood pass' machine, his range of passing is only marginally worse than Scholes.
Will rightly be remembered as a great.

He was even good at diving.

Good? I'd say world class..
Team GB had to have a coin flip between Gerrard and Tom Daley for the London2012 squad.

There was nothing sneaky about Scholes' tackles. If he was frustrated he just kicked you. Simple as that.
