Macca but we funded ISIS to fight Assad

Just like we funded Bin Laden to fight the Russians

Funded the radicals to take over Iran

Now we are dealing with the consequences of those actions.

We should just not waste our resources in the ME or waste the lives of British soldiers. Bring them all home and spend our money here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mudd

I lent a very good friend of mine 10 grand a few years ago to get out of a mess

We drifted apart somewhat because of job moves etc but still kept in sporadic touch.

I found out a few months ago he came into some money and he had spent it on a top of the range car by a mutual friend. He's a bit of a playboy, the reason he got in the mess in the first place.

I called him to confront him and he told me I was talking bollox and he'd paid me back already. He was my best mate.

Funding someone to help them because you believe you are doing the right thing doesn't mean you can't regret it when they change.

Your argument is loose at best.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm afraid yours is the loose one.

Without our weapons and money there would be no ISIS.

Without our intervention in the ME, Iraq would not be what it is today

Without our intervention in Iran, it would be a secular society

Without us training Bin Laden, Al Qaeda would not have existed.

Actions have repercussions, to assume they do not is naive in the extreme.

You have no argument I am afraid
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nice job mitigating terrorism and murder Mudd... let's continue to make excuses for murder.

I agree with that view, even in the article they note that extreme radical islam attacks seek to kill as many people as possible.

Like I said, the goal of these lunatics (terrorists) is not just to kill but to keep us scared and terrified. I remember after 9/11 few people wanted to get on planes and was even on a plane when someone did not want to sit close to a sikh who he thought was an A-rab.

The point I am making and I have made here and the article attempts to do is present facts. This tactic does not apply to just terrorism but other discussions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree. I find it hard to buy into categorical, absolute truths. While perhaps less obviously, "the good vs evil"/"with us or against us" argument that Bush Jr liked to wield about can be just as dangerous as the forces it purports to confront.

From that angle, let me borrow a phrase you typed above:

"Like I said, the goal of these lunatics (terrorists) is not just to kill but to keep us scared and terrified."

Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like, but is it only the terrorists who benefit from scared, malleable populations willing to accept any restriction on civil rights in the name of "security"?

To quote former US National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski the use of the term 'War on Terror' was intended to generate a culture of fear deliberately because it "obscures reason, intensifies emotions and makes it easier for demagogic politicians to mobilize the public on behalf of the policies they want to pursue"

The only way to counter this is to question things we are sold as 'absolute truths' and form our own opinions. It really isn't all that different from the very same principle millions of people apply to religion, by the way. If it isn't that hard to see how the elites might benefit from organised religion, it surely can't be that hard to see what they could stand to gain from populations kept docile using other arguments.

Muslims have hated the west for hundred of year Galv... right back to when the Caliph's were slaughtering half the population of Africa, Europe and India in the 600s AD.

I'm sure most people think that Muslims just one day decided they hated the West on a whim.
Why does no one look at who is responsible?
You keep picking away at someone, eventually they bite back.
It's like a teenager winding up their parents, they show a lot of patience, the moment they flip, the teenager acts as if they're the bad guys ''It's so unfair"

There are also some interesting ideas out there as to the impact of a culture of fear on consumption. But that's a subject perhaps for an entirely different discussion.

Sure there are problems in the ME that have nothing to do with us..................
But that doesn't stop us being there like a squatter just in case there's anything in it for us.
