Just reading about the differences between Russia and Ukraine’s military in terms of materiel.

It does not make for good reading for the Ukrainians.

If they enlist and arm the reservists and veterans, dig in, and fight a messy guerrilha style war on the streets, they can potentially draw this out and make it very, very messy for the Russians.

But they’re outnumbered by a ridiculous margin in the air, in terms of ground-based vehicles, artillery, etc.

Putin must know he can’t hold the entire country and keep any significant proportion of 40m Ukrainians content and pacified. Any Russians in positions of authority in the west would be under constant threat, military, police or administrative.

No idea what his end goal is, but surely it can’t be subsuming the entirety of Ukraine into the Russian state.

Yet what dominated our lives over the past few years has been anti-racism, anti-capitalism, excesses of capitalism (banking really if we’re honest), tax the rich and identity politics. I think you could argue that this is pretty ridiculous given that we agreed to protect Ukraine when they gave up their nuclear weapons in 1994. Or the Crimean Crisis in 2014.

--------------------

Trying to achieve better lives for 99% of the population is ridiculous?

You would prefer a Russian oligarchal system?

I do not see any relationship whatsoever between campaigns for social justice and equity in the West, and its governments’ readiness or willingness to defend Ukraine against the Russians.

Can someone explain how the two can be connected please? Because to me, the first appears to have absolutely zero influence on the second.

Don’t have a clue what you are on about. Why would you think I would prefer a Russian oligarchy?

Your 99% of the population exemplifies what I’m talking about in terms of our western arrogance. I’m not saying we are wrong but I think it is wrong to assume that everyone wants the same things.

It's just a sneaky way of conservatives blaming the left for Putin.

Or they sneakily prefer the strong man, his disdain for equality and social justice to the Liberal democracy they grew up and benefited from.

Biden’s come out of this looking good. For days he clearly said an invasion was going to happen whereas Fox News and other commenters said it would never happen (I imagine Trump would be denying it up until the first tank rolled in if he was in power).

Then those same people said that Biden and the left were warmongers and wanted to drag the US into another war. Well, Biden clearly says there will be no troops on the ground.

I thought his press conference earlier was very good and to the point. He’s definitely improved perception of him amongst a lot of people.

On the positive side, Russia can't deploy their whole military on Ukraine. They have a lot of borders.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s a fair point, but I guess the vast majority of their land borders are mountainous terrain between Russia and countries which bear little to no threat to them militarily (and I would include the Chinese in that).

There are obviously a couple of areas in Central Asia they need to keep an eye on.

Problem though is Fox and co will just change the narrative to whatever suits.

"He's a war hawk" quickly becomes "He's weak and has allowed Russia to invade" when he doesn't proposed military action.

Oh of course. Fox is the nugget of shiiiit that just won’t flush of America, but hopefully amongst the wider eye of the US he’s improved peoples opinions of him.
