I do not see any relationship whatsoever between campaigns for social justice and equity in the West, and its governments’ readiness or willingness to defend Ukraine against the Russians.

Can someone explain how the two can be connected please? Because to me, the first appears to have absolutely zero influence on the second.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's just a sneaky way of conservatives blaming the left for Putin.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No it isn’t. It’s a comment on focusing on the wrong things. That’s all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is it one or the other? Also it’s not as if focus has been on social justice and improving society for all, irrespective or race, gender or sexuality and Russia has snuck up on us catching us off guard. The threat of Russia and what it could do has been well known for years.

Unless this is a lament of the Conservatives who trot out phrases like “woke” and “culture wars” whilst giving golden visas to Oligarchs and accepting £2m in donations from Russians.

I blame austerity for reducing our military capabilities personally..

That and brexit for weakening ourselves, and the EU.

There are people who are genuinely trying to use Russia's invasion, to make completely unrelated points on other things, like gender for instance. And who are sincere about it.

Then there are people who all seem to use the same joke, over and over. It's a little hard to see the difference between the difference people at times.

Well I think there is something to be said about perhaps our arrogance in the west that after the Cold War everyone wanted western lifestyle and perhaps we did take our eye off the ball with some pretty ridiculous stuff whilst Putin and China too have been making serious moves that pointed towards this kind of outcome. Yet what dominated our lives over the past few years has been anti-racism, anti-capitalism, excesses of capitalism (banking really if we’re honest), tax the rich and identity politics. I think you could argue that this is pretty ridiculous given that we agreed to protect Ukraine when they gave up their nuclear weapons in 1994. Or the Crimean Crisis in 2014.

In 2019 a poll said that 70% of Russians believed that Stalin played a positive role in their country’s history. Was he that popular in the early 2000s? I haven’t researched but I highly doubt it.

Obviously the gender neutral toilets reference is an exaggeration used for humour but the serious point that perhaps lurks behind that meme that I saw is that we perhaps took our eyes off the ball and thought the world was different to how it actually still is.

I’m guilty of this, I didn’t think Putin would actually go all Soviet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good post.

I think Putin has surprised even his own Moscow mob with his actions in recent days.

He is a tyrant whoay have seen Kabul and western leaders weaknesses as a sign he can invade, without much opposition on the ground.

However, the notion we are focused on race, gender and such things does not take away the reality of Putin being an old school KSB Russian nationalist who hates Ukraine going west, and hates the NATO and EU entities.

Not a slight, mate, but I have heard folk saying we were looking at toilets and pronouns, and so Putin thought, I can invade and move west.

What I have seen on GB news is presenters and news reporting Putin as the aggressor, but of course there will be other voices, as that is what GB do, with different narratives allowed.

from a hungarian girl i know on another forum:

"I criticised Russia and Putin many times, just ask Rumata or Krillmazur they called me anti-russian many times. I am talking about only this war now and i hate this fake narrative that Russia is a big Satan and Ukraine is a peaceful "victim", because its simple not true. Of course a war is not a good thing, but the ukrainian government and the NATO elite also have many responsibility in this situation.
These historical injuries what romanians, and some polish user said about Russia are true, but we cannot live in the past forever. Should i hate russians just because they invaded Hungary in 1956? The background of that was the hungarian declaration of war on Russia during the WW2, and modern russians have nothing to do with these thing what happened 100-150 years ago. No i wont hate them, because its nonsense.
Of course i have personal feelings too, as partly hungarian i remember when the ukrainian government always penalised the hungarian minority for example with the language law or even pogroms commited by neonazi Right Sector ( i guess the russian minority had same experiens), and when the hungarian politicians protested against it, they just laughed at this little Hungary with big face. Now Russia play same game with Ukraine what ukrainians did with Hungary earlier, and yes it's not a nice thing but they deserved the russian intervention as well in my opinion.
Another thing, you as jewish why do you support Ukraine? But seriously, the maidan protesters and this ukrainian army is full of real neonazi Right Sector members. I know a little bit the hungarian jewish minority, and no one support Ukraine because of it.

I didn't say i want to annex Transylvania, stop your paranoia."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Keep posting mate, and providing two sides of the story that people do not always hear👍

There is a natzi or neo natzi element to Ukrainian nationalism that is worth highlighting, even if this is blown out of proportion by Putin, as a reason to invade.

For me it just puts things into perspective and perhaps the west has become a little ‘weak’ in their eyes.

That doesn’t mean that I want a Russian oligarchy as per Insert’s question to me.

Morning hawk 😀

Guy I was working for yesterday is very well travelled and informed, and when talking about rusdiamoving west, he said Finland would be very hard for Putin to attack or hold.

He had to go to his own job, but is it the case Finland is a tough nut to crack, other than NATO membership?

Terrain, good army, or just took far away and potentially too risky for Russia?

Just as an aside and your Finnish interest, mate👍

The problem is that comment defeats that kind of point you are making. It's turning an international crisis into a culture war talking point. It's a distraction from the crisis itself.

And the other thing is that I am glad we do live in a society with our politics, and not the politics of Russia or China. We probably have been distracted by domestic politics recently, but everyone across the political spectrum is responsible for this.

Sat.

On France 24 right now they show Ukraine Leade Zelenksy day he stands alone....so that is what the man at the centre of the invasion feels, so criticism of the west, rest of the world and NATO is relevant, and not you or I being bots or oligarch supporters, if we highlight western weakness, self- interest or lack of focus.

That said, I still do not want UK or USA boots in Ukraine fighting Russians, but that is what Ukraine want and what NATO retired generals and military experts allude to.

Russia may have tanks in Kyiv after only 24 hours, so this is massive and yet the west and NATO are not going in?

Ukraine must feel alone.

Fair comment, but Sat did day it was in jest...I take you point though, as western liberal democracy and freedom do trump life under Putin or in China.

Perhaps, we did take our eye off the Russian leader while naval gazing, but Putin shocked the world with his action, including yours truly, who did not think he would be mad or stupid or evil enough to start a full scale war and invasion.
