One note of alarm - wheat prices.

Gets missed in the oil, gas and gold chat.

But we are at record wheat prices in the UK

This will hit beer, pizza, bread, pasta and hospitality generally plus could even see premiums in supermarkets.

Actual supplies are secure for us but markets are global and Ukraine invasion has hit indexes in France, UK and US

Also learned Commerzbank havea wheat expert

Something very German about that lol
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A bank has a wheat expert? Pffffft.
Canada used to have a National Wheat Board.

It was 50 yesterday so let’s maybe give it a week see where the numbers get to before we start making sarcastic comments, shall we?

The most important part is that they are out of Ukraine

Why do they need a week? What's the hold up? Do we only have one biometric machine or something?

It's pretty damning that this once great nation cannot offer succour to the desperate.

Boringly predictable avoidance.

Your weird link is about aid in 2017, we've since cut our aid budget by between £4-5 billion.

Were we sponsoring Pakistan's Nuclear Programme back then?

Boring predictable moaning for you as always. You have no idea what their challenges are yet you find it ludicrous that they need time to sort out their processes for another unexpected disaster. Have you tried to implement change since covid? It’s a nightmare.

That weird link was the top result when searching for countries listed by aid given to counter your boring miser comments on this once great nation.

Unexpected disaster! don't make me laugh, your boys are claiming credit for deploying our troops to the Baltic and Poland in preparation of Putin's actions, so what, refugees fleeing a war zone was unforseeable was it? They could organise the military but not the foreign visa offices? It's another example of ineptitude.

The avoidance jibe might have been better phrased as whitabootery as it doesn't address my original questions about why it's taking so long.
Your link was a wristband manufacturer mate!

The Wiki link is still out of date, we've cut our overseas aid budget from 0.7% to 0.5% since 2019.

Satters - why do other countries in Europe appear able to mobilise quicker? They’ve had the “same” covid we have had.

And, you're dead right I'm moaning about the depths this conservative government are plunging us into, you might think they're right to diminish our standing internationally as a country that offers refuge to people fleeing war zones, I don't. It's a simple choice.

Go get more up to date data then.

You have no idea what you are talking about yet are moaning about our response.

I said the numbers would go up, they already are doing.

I said give it a week, give it a week. Are the refugees coming directly from Ukraine or via other European countries?

No it isn't.

Where will they live? Will they be vetted? Will we prioritise younger people or families? How will we fund their arrival? Will English speaking be a requirement? What is our quota compared to European countries? How long should they be allowed to stay for without a visa?

posted on 8/3/22

I also think we should ignore the immediate emotional response of 'take everyone' - I don't want us doing what Germany did in 2015.
