Whilst I'm all for tougher sanctions for people smugglers, the Patel announcement is yet another inhumane example of the Gov making it as hard as possible for those fleeing persecution/harm to claim asylum in the UK.

Whilst the Gov upscales its arms sales to the likes of Saudi Arabia, and slashes humanitarian aid to Yemen, if/when those impacted by the aforementioned conflict seek asylum in the UK, will now be deemed illegal if they cannot verify their identity by way of a passport etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How many asylum seekers should UK and Ireland take and how many migrants?

Personally, sales of weapons to Saudis is wrong, but jobs depend on that.

Foreign aid has been given to the likes of India which is a top 5 global power so perhaps during covid and recession looming, belts get tightened, but Yemen does seem horrible at present, like much of Africa and middle East, killing and beheading and led by lunatics.

The rest has tried to intervene and help or change regimes all over, but that fails too.

Tell us how many asylum seekers we can expect to take in and people may surprise you.

Good thread on this from Alf Dubs (of the Dubs amendment) who sought to offer/protect unaccompanied refugee children safe passage to the UK.

Where to start with Patel's 'overhaul' of the rules regarding asylum, announcement today?
A thread...

The Home Office claims it is 'collapsing' under the number of asylum claims. The Home Secretary herself described the asylum process as 'broken'. But this government has been in charge for a decade, during which time the application process has got 8 times longer.

In 2019 there were approx 5 asylum applications for every 10,000 residents in the UK. Compare that to the EU average of 14 asylum applications per 10,000 of the population, placing us 17th in the EU in terms of asylum applications per head of population.

The HO has closed the only two legal routes for refugee children stranded in Europe, including lone children and those with family here, to seek asylum in the UK. This is not "fair but firm' - it keeps families apart and lacks compassion.

removing legal routes to safety doesn't prevent criminality - it fuels it. The day the legal routes for refugee children seeking asylum here was closed was a field day for people traffickers and smugglers who exploit despair.

And just to add one final piece of data, because facts matter. There were 29,456 asylum applications in the UK in 2020 - a drop of 18% on 2019. Germany took 7 times that number (121,955), France & Spain took 3 times that number (93,470 and 88, 530) & Greece (pop 10m) took 40,560.

When a Conservative Housing Secretary is seizing control of Labour Liverpool over corruption allegations can Tower Hamlets take over the running of Robert Jenrick’s Department after he unlawfully tried to fix it for a Tory donor to avoid paying £40m+ to a London deprived borough?

FACTS:

UK already has some of the toughest asylum rules in world

Asylum applications are extremely low - same levels as they were in 1980s

Two thirds of them are rejected

UK is home to just 0.48% of the world’s refugees

Asylum seekers receive £39.60 a week

GOVERNMENT:

Priti Patel@pritipatel

The current system is b̶r̶o̶k̶e̶n̶, o̶u̶t̶d̶a̶t̶e̶d̶ and u̶n̶f̶a̶i̶r̶.

This is why we're fixing the UK's asylum system with our New Plan for Immigration Flag of United Kingdom

‘Two thirds of them are rejected’
At initial decision, after including appeals it is around 54%

I think the pool of water surrounding the UK might, just might, be a factor in why we take in less than mainland Europe.

The 1980s FACT is completely misleading this is due to Covid-19 not some general trend towards levels from the 80s.

Yes, i think we get spooked by boats in the channel, guys jumping on lorries at Calais and asylum numbers, but the figure is small and if folk are being killed or oppressed and UK Ireland can be a safe haven, let them come, imo.

My only query was how many?

Millions would perhaps create tension, as certain towns and cities seem to get the bulk, regarding immigration and asylum, so if we share the load across UK Ireland, u am sure we can squeeze more asylum seekers in.

I’ve already come to terms with us being an anti foreigner country a long time ago.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

In the past year the UK has pledged £500m to Covax - the worldwide shared vaccine scheme, it has spent $19.37 billion on foreign aid - the third highest amoing worldwide, it is currently ranked third on the World Giving Index, and had the most positive view of immigration in Europe in YouGov's Globalism Survey.

Hate foreigners apparently, go figure
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We are doing really badly with our anti-foreign ways.
