A think tank has blamed "woeful budgeting" at the Home Office for repeated overspending on asylum support.
Over the last three years, the department's initial estimated budgets for asylum, border, visa and passport operations amounted to £320m.
But the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said it had ended up spending £7.9bn over the period, £7.6bn more than forecast.
The IFS also warned the department had submitted figures it "knows to be insufficient" for this year.

Ridiculous, the final nail in the coffin for traditional boozers
posted 3 weeks, 1 day ago
Not sure there are many traditional boozers left in business these days. Most depend on food sales and try and change to gastro pubs or the like.
From that point of view I think I'm for it, but would want it extended to outside hospitals, hotels, playgrounds, schools or indeed most public places. Genuinely riles me when you run a gauntlet of smokers just trying to get into a hotel, airport or the like.
Wish they'd treat vapes the same way as they do tobacco as well.
They have to make it an illegal act. You can't expect bar staff and the like to police it.

Hardly any left around where I am now. One was a traditional pub and changed to the gastro experience whilst renovating the premises. It lost it's "soul" to an extent and interestingly at the weekend when I went back in it seems to have reverted more to a pub vibe.
And better for it.

Smokers contribute more to the exchequer than you do in tax revenue. They also contribute enough to pub revenue to warrant pubs building outdoor spaces to accomodate them. What right do non smokers have to dictate who uses outdoor spaces built to accommodate smokers.
Smoking near hospitals, schools or playgrounds makes sense and is a fair point. Airports etc smoking areas are usually no where near the entrances and exits.

Smokers pay much more to the tax revenue than I do? Hardly a shock when something like 13% of adults still smoke. Completely irrelevant in any case and I'd suggest they cost proportionately more in health care than I do as well.
What right do smokers as a minority group have to pollute public space for non smokers might be a more appropriate question.
Disgusting habit anyway.
