I doubt pubs will enforce a smoking ban in beer gardens, especially on busy nights when it’s heaving you can’t be policing that

Go to the o2 or any other sporting event on a Saturday night and the toilets stink of smoke or the stairwells because people smoke there even though it’s banned. People will still just do it regardless

We should ban cars too. I’m sick of the pollution in the air.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think anyone is talking about banning smoking. Although I can see it eventually heading that way if it just doesn't happen naturally as society changes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Plenty of people are talking about banning smoking.

What? It's just a debate on the supposed ban on smoking in public places.

I'm just passing the time of day. Why make it personal?

Guess the problem is where does it end.

I’d love to ban food on trains, fed up of listening to khunts waffling down or crunching food on trains

Guess we should probably ban fish and nuts from being consumed in public and on planes/trains too given peoples deadly allergies to them and that they stink
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Think this is more around health and wellbeing as opposed to personal dislikes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That is health and well-being given people have serious allergies and can die from just breathing in shellfish or nuts, far more dangerous than inhaling a bit of second hand smoke in the fresh air

"What right do smokers as a minority group have to pollute public space for non smokers might be a more appropriate question."

You mean outdoor spaces built to accommodate smokers following the smoking ban?

A single smoker contributes more in tax revenue then yourself given the cost of a packet of ciggies/tobacco is mostly tax. Tax revenue from smoking, just under £10bn pa, cost to the NHS pa, £2.6bn.

Are non smokers going to make up the £7.4bn pa shortfall?

Smoking though - it’s the most pointless thing ever. I can’t wait until it’s 100% eradicated in all legal ways in the years to come. One day society will look back on smoking and cringe at how popular it was - whilst being so dangerous.

Airlines are quite hot on this these days. I can hardly remember a flight in the last couple of years where an announcement hasn't been made. I'm surprised they still have them on board.

And every eating establishment by law has to ask any diners if they have any allergies and cater for them where they can.

If health and wellbeing was such a concern alcohol, processed foods & cars should also be banned then yeah?

The post Brexit £350m/week to the NHS surely covers that, and more.

Wait, what? Why are you laughing?

No. If there are specific areas for smokers then that's fine by me.

No idea why again you want to mention my tax revenue compared to smokers though. There is no comparison, but neither is there a comparison with our relative health costs either.

No idea if one balances out the other to be honest but over lifetimes I suspect the health costs are more than the revenue gained.

If there are specific areas in beer gardens away from the general are for customers then fine. I believe this potential move is to stop open beer gardens and the like being used by smokers.

The brewers have facked the pub game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Think it's more that society has changed, forcing independent landlords to sign up to a brewery. Slippery slope I agree.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s definitely the breweries. One of the reason the drinking culture has changed with the younger generation is due to the breweries facking pubs with their extortionate prices.

Just for clarity.

I have no issue with designated smoking areas at all. They can pollute themselves in like minded company all they want.

They were created to accommodate smokers. Now non smokers want to co-opt that space for themselves. A bit selfish no?

If that is what is being mooted, then yes it is. Again, I've no problem with bespoke areas for smokers.

My mrs spends all day in her Spirometry clinics treating smokers who wont/cant stop with COPD and other lung conditions. Because they are addicts they lie about cutting down trying to cease smoking. Their kids also all have asthma problems and get lung infections constantly. They go to school with their uniforms stinking of stale smoke. Many smoke themselves and the cycle will continue with their own kids. The best thing Sunak ever proposed was banning people buying cigs year on year so they legally would never be able to buy them. The cost of smokers vs tobacco tax revenue collected dosnt come close in real terms. It needs to be banned. Now.
