Wow that's surprising! One if the largest populations in the EU has one on the highest death tolls.
Who would have thought?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hasn’t Germany got the largest population
----------------------------------------------------------------------
83 million.
7000 deaths.

The one that really gets me is when they knew what was coming so decided to issue advice not to go to pubs etc, but didn't actually close anything.

I think that was at least a week before lockdown. Imagine how many lives could have been saved and the virus' impact limited if they had locked down then as they should have.

Pure incompetence.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The government also downgraded the severity of Covid19 a week after the WHO declared it a global pandemic.

The USA & The UK.

Leading the world once again.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Belgium is actually if you are looking at deaths per capita, but you just chose whatever suits your agenda
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its not a competition you absolute freak, seen the exact same excuses rolled out by trump fans, "oh well x amount died of flu last year" an idiots response if I've ever seen one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He wasn't wrong.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What differemce does that make? Are you really taking a position that it's OK people died that didn't have to because a tiny country has a few more deaths per million?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You called him a freak for stating a fact. And praised Ireland who haven't great numbers either.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
While it certainly has not been all roses over here during this, the UK has approx 13 times our population and 25 times the deaths.
The initial plan by the government followed by failures to learn from Spain and Italy has almost definitely caused some deaths that may heave been avoided.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you take out the diddy Countries like san marino and Andorra etc then Ireland has the 8th worse death rate per capita for countries of over 1 million.

Yet your leader is getting praise? beggars belief

----------------------------------------------------------------------very few have "great numbers" and I also pointed out mistakes have been made in Ireland.

He's a freak to treat this like a competition.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Was that what he was doing or just your interpretation ? I think we both know the answer.

the reason boris is declaring it as a successful reaction is because the NHS was never overwhelmed (i.e everyone who needed a bed / ventilator, had one).

basically was happy for more people to have it, and therefore die from it, as long as it didn't happen all at once at any point.

unbelievable to think that Johnson seems to genuinely believe that the response by the UK government has been a success.

at absolute best they would get a 5/10, and that is very very generous.

how the fack everything stayed open for so long despite every day on the news we were seeing what was happening in spain and Italy is baffling. how were the airports still letting flights from china spain and Italy in for so long??? no testing at the border? no forced quarantine? instead just advice to self isolate.

facking ridiculous.

but its not just the government to blame... so many caaaants in this country completely ignoring the social distancing etc guidelines anyway.. so there is only so much the government can do.

what was the stat for house parties shut down in one weekend in greater Manchester alone a couple of weeks into lockdown?... if i remember rightly it was up in the thousands.

this country is full of absolute caaants, so it is apt that the government is also full of them.

Arteta probably saved a couple hundred thousand lives by going public with his diagnosis the way he did.

No one in any major decision-making capacity was going to risk a drop in business otherwise.

I called it weeks ago we should have locked down sooner , as per usual we were so British about the entire thing.

The following does not exculpate the mistakes that have been made but merely is contextualising them which is something that some people are refusing to do in line with using this as an excuse to have a go at the ‘opposite’ party to which they support; the ultimate irony is that these parties are so bloody similar anyway...

And why is it that The Guardian is the only paper quoted on here these days? Do people not read a variety of sources to gain a fuller, more informed & rounded view of topics anymore?

Is it that surprising that we have the largest numbers given we have such a large number of people in a relatively small area??? £66m in 96,000m2

I agree with a lot of this. But on the point of the NHS not getting overwhelmed, that is because they'd cancelled any case that was non COVID.

There's people sat at home who were meant to be having operations that would save their life and they don't know when it'll happen.

Big Difference is our population is 7 times bigger & we don't need to rely on 100 year old men to raise money for PPE for our doctors and nurses. Trump might be a clown but the US is dealing with things on a far bigger scale. Can u imagine what a shlt show the UK would be if the population was just twice what it is

posted on 5/5/20

Ghod, I was taking the piiiiss. There are actually people, including the government themselves, that think they’ve dealt with it well. Boggles the mind.

It's getting increasingly difficult to tell the difference between the Yank and the English ones. Even the Brazilian and Australian ones for that matter.

The widespread use of Yank terminologies and phrasing is uncanny.
