Making the police more accountable would be a more practical change. But this hasn’t been happening. Which is why these protests and riots exist by the so called left. This isn’t a a left and right issue, never has been, even it the more radical among those political sides want to pretend it is.

These protests are like the one good thing going on in the world right now, and you've got clowns trying to downplay/stop them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Whilst I support the movement, the timing is off. Also the looting, violence and defacing of war memorials detracts from the goal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately there’s nothing anyone can do about the timing. 100% of the blame has to go to the policeman who murdered George Floyd - anytime would be bad but during a pandemic opens a Pandora’s box.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I just worry that we are going to get the second wave and that the most susceptible are going to be the ones hit.

All this protesting will be in vain if black people continue to live in deprived areas with gang violence and so on.
The way I see it, until this changes, nothing changes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah that didn’t answer the question. You’re trying to refute why one way won’t work, which is fine, and to an extent I agree, but then don’t claim the ‘non-liberls’ are trying for practical change when you have no examples of it. As that’s not trying for anything, but leaving the status quo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe some of them do want to keep the status quo.
We end up in the usual situation with two extreme groups getting all the attention, with the more balanced moderate voices drowned out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I do think that’s true. But I still think you’re skirting around the issue when talking about practical change, as balanced moderation is still completely under the control of the powerful white majority.

I could have sworn it was about racist policemen. And that is something that can change and hopefully these protests at least get some decent cops to make sure their racist colleagues don’t disgrace the badge anymore.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Making the police more accountable would be a practical change.
The deprived neighbourhoods however, does increase that communities interaction with the police, which is part of the problem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The onus is on the police to stop killing black people, not on the level of police interaction to stop. Even if a neighbourhood of 10,000 people were all criminals, the least they should expect is to not be killed by the police.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Were not most of the black people killed by police armed?
So how are you going to stop cops shooting armed people?

Hopefully these protests will weed out a lot of the bad ones whether than be from the good cops anonymously ratting out bad seeds in the force or even making some of the bad ones realising it’s not worth the shiiitstorm that would come their way if someone dies on their watch.

You think they’re going to abolish the police?
I’m a bit piiiiissed but I didn’t even reach that conclusion.
I thought the protests were about police brutality? Now its all about racism?
Where is the evidence of racism? Or if a white person attacks a black person it is automatically seen as racism?
Seemed to me, one evil cop who lost control. And his fellow officers at the scene, one being black, and one being Asian didn't protect and serve also.
Interesting how it is turning into a racially motivated crime now though.

It’s more about how so many black people are killed by the police and how little is done to stop it. Can you blame black people for thinking that’s maybe there’s a race element to it?
One would have to be very naive to deny there is a problem with race in America and the stormtrooper police are a big part of that.

if an area is known for the violence the police are going to be more aggressive than in say a rich area where violence rarely occurs
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Still no excuse for kneeling on a mans neck for 9 minutes. There are police who will do their job whether they’re in Beverly Hills or South Central. And there are still murderous and racist cops who are just looking for any excuse to end someone’s life.
Hopefully these protests will weed out a lot of the bad ones whether than be from the good cops anonymously ratting out bad seeds in the force or even making some of the bad ones realising it’s not worth the shiiitstorm that would come their way if someone dies on their watch.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The cops are still sticking together, just look at their reaction to the cops that pushed the 75 year old man to the ground.

What’s this practical change?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
All this protesting will be in vain if black people continue to live in deprived areas with gang violence and so on.
The way I see it, until this changes, nothing changes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Blaming it on gang violence and deprived neighbourhoods?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Far too many black people are killed unarmed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How many black unarmed people are killed by police?

Daz, what are your thoughts on Minneapolis completely shutting down the whole police force for good?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yeah... lets just abolish the police and let society govern itself
then we'll see how these minorities feel when they have zero protection from the majority...
the world has lost its damn mind.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Americans aren’t feeling the protection that they are supposed to be getting from the police. Why aren’t you getting this? This is essentially what the protests are about.

Most of the majority are suburban, middle-class families with 2.4 kids, who's only experience of a fight is honking someone who cut them off while driving.
Behave yourself kid.

It’s more about how so many black people are killed by the police and how little is done to stop it. Can you blame black people for thinking that’s maybe there’s a race element to it?
One would have to be very naive to deny there is a problem with race in America and the stormtrooper police are a big part of that.

‘I live in a society,’ Malcolm X said, ‘which has more subtle methods to make the rest of the world think it’s cleaning up its house while the same things are happening to us in 1964 that happened in 1954, 1924 and 1894.’
Imagine the fact this was uttered over half a century ago, and his words ring true in our ears today. This is why there’s protesting. People have had enough of talking.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And what did MLK say?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I had a dream
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He also said "I must confess that that dream that I had that day has in many points turned into a nightmare."
And “I Fear I May Have Integrated My People Into a Burning House.”
