“ I believe if they have the money in their bank account no one should tell them how they can spend it.”

So if from here on in City spent £1bn on players In two seasons to dominate the league for the next 10-15 years you’d be fine with that? The only competition being those who can spend the same amount?

Is that competition or just a case of who’s got the biggest bank balance?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It always was who had the biggest balance in recent years.

I’m afraid my objections to this system are too deeply ingrained for you to convince me otherwise.

Your own team, Liverpool are considered amongst the elite clubs of Europe due to the exploits of the team of the 70s and 80s. You’ve made it big and I understand you (and the other European Giants) want to protect that status you have.

As a young supporter in the 70s I was resigned to the fact that clubs like Chelsea would never compete with Liverpool and Manchester United and had to watch with envy as you would raid every other club for the best players and up and coming players in the league. Our best young players and heroes to us were picked off, such as Ray Wilkins in 79, even though he didn’t want to leave us. That was the power wielded by the major clubs.

Moving on 40 years and we’ve had Roman, taking over at Chelsea and giving us the means to compete against the elite, can you imagine the emotions of life long Chelsea supporters, seeing us lift the title in 2005? It was a dream come true for me, one I never thought I’d witness in my lifetime and just that one title meant I can die a happy man when that time comes calling.

That would never have happened had it been for FFP, without Chelsea and Man City it would be back to the days of everyone complaining about the PL being boring again because it’s Arsenal and Man United winning everything every season as it was up to 2004.

So if fans of other clubs can feel the joy that I’ve experienced, I have no complaints if their clubs go out and spend £1b in two seasons to give them the joy I’ve had.

So you’ll have to excuse me if I seem unsympathetic to the objections of Liverpool and United supporters that feel they’re being hard done by here.

I don’t expect you to agree with me but maybe it’ll give you an insight into the way I feel, the way I do over it!

yep, i find it slightly odd this whole "city (and chelsea) have distorted the game, bought their way to the top, it's so unfair" argument, because what was the alternative?

united have won 13 PL titles, and finished 2nd to a doped-up club 5 times (city and chelsea twice, blackburn once). so i assume everyone calling city cheats would have preferred to see united win another 5 titles, making it 18 of 27 (?) PL titles? what fun!

even with ffp PSG have won 7 of the last 8 titles, and munich 8 in a row. juventus have managed to be relegated due to a match fixinf scandal, lose half their team, and still are on course to win their 9th title in a row.

so i do find it odd this obsession with FFP over here, when we're pretty much the most competitive and unpredictable of the major european leagues. for sure, if we were about to see the same league winner for the 9th time in a row, we might want to look at some way to level the playing field (a salary cap would be the most obvious, though there would then be an exodus of players in general away from the PL).

but we're not in that boat, city haven't spent £500m on each member of their first 11, no team has dominated the PL over the past two decades, and our league remains one of the most popular in the world.

oh, and i'm assuming that all those who complain about city's unearned riches, and whinge that they didn't "earn it themselves", have no problem with united's owners having taken over £1bn out of the club over the past 15 years in debt repayments/dividends/directors' fees?

I notice you had to get the doped in there.

Many of the larger clubs have been 'doped' as you put it at some time in their history.

I'm sure Oldham, Bolton, and Bury were thrilled to find a 'doped' up re-incarnation of Newtown Heath on their doorstep in 1902.

I'll bet $purs were delighted to have Dial Square rock up on their manor in 1913 with more than a little help from Henry Norris!

it was shorthand for "club receiving significant equity injections from owners"...if you'd read the rest of my post properly, you'd realise i don't actually care where clubs get their money from .

but your point is a valid one, every club will be financially doped at some point, and FFP seemed to be a way of saying "well, we allowed it for years, but now we'll put an end to it in a very crude way, so that anyone who benefitted before FFP can keep those benefits, and tough luck to the rest"

i'm too lazy even to reach for the caps lock key, so i'll always look for the shorthand version of something, even if it sometimes gives the wrong impression (!)

What we have learnt today is the UEFA have little or no clout over the big clubs of Europe and that their Fair Play policy is now dead in the water.

So moving forwards, what does this mean for English football?

I think that this ruling gives a (Saudi) green light for Newcastle United to now proceed to buy the Premier League and the Champions League for many seasons to com. That's what.

posted on 13/7/20

No, all we have learned today is that Uefa didn’t follow their own regulations and also didn’t have enough evidence in this particular case, that’s all.

What on earth has today’s verdict got to do with a completely different process (owned by a completely different organisation) in terms of the fit and proper persons test?!

‘Buying the CL’ has been pretty much how they set the competition up to do anyway.

Newcastle could prove interesting as you say, The Saudis may well get their club now..

It was only luck I support United. I dare say it was luck for Liverpool supporters.
But how much nicer it is to feel we are where we are because of great managers and players, not great riches.

What was the luck you refer to, about 69?

Are you from Manchester and if not what made you support them if you don't mind me asking?

How can anybody remember why you started a certain club when you were very young. I was bought up in M/C halfway between Stretford and Maine Road. I was taken to a City game before I saw United. For some reason United got a hold of me and not City. Probably something to do with the United Trinity, The superior football stadium and the swashbuckling style of football.

In my experience the vast, vast majority of people support the club their dad did.

The idea that 4 year olds are walking around thinking ‘I’d like to support this team because they are most local to my house’ is horsesheite.

I suppose it paves a way for the Saudis taking over United which is what all their fans have been praying for.

In Ireland you are given a choice at birth.

Man Utd or Liverpool.

No deviations

True majority there support these two teams. Also, it is true that it is changing recently.
