Reasons for children to support a particular team:
- Who the person of most influence supports (most commonly the Dad) - by far the most common reason.
- Who friends support.
- Who their favourite player plays for.
- Who is successful.
Things that have no influence on their decision:
- The distance from their house to the ground.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That last one can sometimes happen, I know a few people that have moved into areas and started supporting their local team. Less so for children as such as you say though, it’s just more likely for them due to the other reasons you mention (dads supporting the local team and passing it down or their friends supporting them).
TV has changed things a lot though. It’s a lot less balanced than it used to be, that started a couple of generations ago though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know it can happen, although would say it’s very rare for young children. Extremely rare.
Depends how successful their dads team is or if they go to see them often

Yeah, it won’t be the primary reason, it can’t be really. It can be a secondary one though as it influences the other ones you mentioned.

It's not if
1) If you have a dad who isn't a football fan
2) If you don't have a dad.
3) You have a dad who supports a different team that you want to.
Vast, vast majority ?
Just adding my experience.
Do you have anything other than your opinion to back up the assertion that 'it's absolutely true' that the majority of fans support the same team as their dad?
Oh and keep reading for the expanded theory if you’re interested.

I'm not. I've read enough. It's a non-starter.
I mean, I'm open to the idea but I can't see how you can claim it's an absolute truth without anything to back it up.

You don’t seem to understand what the word majority means.
Of course there are exceptions ffs, I’ve listed several myself.
This is boring and a bit pointless if you can’t even read basic words properly, so I’ll leave you to it.

For me it was because of Typhoo Tea!
Man United have, what, a billion supporters the world over?
How many of United’s worldwide fan base support the club because their father did?
I get Winston’s point though. I think a distinction needs to be made between local fans and worldwide fans. I would say that a large majority of fans who are local to their clubs, especially in cities which have more than one club, did chose the club they support because their father supported that club.
I don’t see this as a contentious point.
For what it’s worth, I support City because of my father. and my father supports City because his father, my grandfather did.
I think this is more common than not.
