That’s not entirely true. You must know this already Winston.

It is true.

My Dad was born in Salford and supported United.

We lived nearer Maine Rd than Old Trafford and my schoolmates mainly supported City so I became a City fan.

most people support a football club because someone's passion for football rubbed of on them when they were younger usually a relative

Reasons for children to support a particular team:

- Who the person of most influence supports (most commonly the Dad) - by far the most common reason.

- Who friends support.

- Who their favourite player plays for.

- Who is successful.

Things that have no influence on their decision:

- The distance from their house to the ground.

I’m not taking my own experience and applying it. I’m taking a combination of common sense and what I know of hundreds of people.

You're lucky to know hundreds of people that well.

That would definitely be restricted to teams in your locale. It's how come I support Spurs even though I lived an hour or more from the stadium. It's also the reason most fans have a second team that is just down the road.

And in that case, locality is not the primary reason - unless you went to football on your own from 4 years old.

My dad hated football. He never once set foot in a football stadium. So that scuppers your theory Winston.

Also the amount of kids I knew who had a brother, he was a red so the other became a blue.

That last one can sometimes happen, I know a few people that have moved into areas and started supporting their local team. Less so for children as such as you say though, it’s just more likely for them due to the other reasons you mention (dads supporting the local team and passing it down or their friends supporting them).

TV has changed things a lot though. It’s a lot less balanced than it used to be, that started a couple of generations ago though.

Just saying it's one reason.

Technically I saw Colchester first. It's a wonder I like football at all.
