I think people are taking things a little too literally, don’t you, OP?
Obviously most people aren’t actually mourning.
But it’s just a traditional approach to a head of states passing.
Arguably outdated, but still to be taken in the context intended.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps, Winston, you're fixating too much on the single word 'mourning'. I'm speaking more generally about a disjunction between the tone of the media and the tone of all the private individuals around me, and the omerta, which I find peculiar, in which the national discourse will not acknowledge this.
Well yesterday was a weird day. It started off with us anxiously waiting about an announcement about the energy bills crisis and ended up with people watching blanket news coverage about the ill health and subsequent death of a 96yo woman we don’t know.
I’m not a monarchist at all but yesterday was surreal. The Queen has always kind of been there through the entirety of my life and seeing a King instead of a Queen will be strange. Having said that it won’t really affect me at all. I didn’t know her, so I won’t grieve. I think it would be strange to do so. Grief is something for close family and friends not distant strangers. It’s OK to be sad for anyone when their nearest and dearest pass away but there’s also no need to go OTT.
People will say that she did a lot for the country and performed her duties admirably. To be honest though I think they’d have said that no matter what she’d have done. She was the Queen! She could probably get away with most things!
The next few weeks are going to be painful. Wall to wall coverage across all channels when, to be frank, most people have far more pressing concerns. Events, years in the planning, will be cancelled. Well-meaning platitudes and tedious anecdotes will be all the rage. All whilst people will still have the worry and stress of merely surviving over the Winter months.
What I’ll be doing is getting on with my life as normal. If she did truly care about her ‘subjects’ that’s what she’d want all of us to do as well.
After the funeral it’s also probably the time to start thinking about the role of the monarchy in modern society. It seems an opportune moment to do so. The world is very different to what it was in 1952 and people aren’t as willing to accept deference and an automatic right to be head of state.
None of the above is meant disrespectfully. It’s always sad when someone dies and this is one of those times as, after all, she was a human. That’s the point though. She was human. Not someone to idolise and worship.

A 96 year old died. So what? We all die eventually, and having lived that long it can barely be a surprise, much less a tragedy.
She died on a comfortable bed, in one of her many homes. Warm, well fed and receiving the best medical care possible. Having spent her entire life in pampered luxury, with a "job" that consisted of wandering from place to place to be fed and shown things.
I'll save my sadness for those people that died too young. Or died from neglect, or cold or hunger. Who died in squalid conditions, without ever getting a proper chance.
In the meantime I'd be delighted if someone could share with me all the wonderful things she's supposed to have done over her reign. Because I can't think of a damn thing. Unless popping out the odd pedophile counts?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
She had no choice in her role.
She was to represent us on the world stage, the messages from around the world show she did it well.
Paedophile, sleeping with a seventeen year old? Half the blokes on the site are then, including me

But the media love to feed off emotions and this is their perfect opportunity.. Get outside Buck palace and speak to some morons for their soundbytes. Some dork on bbc was saying how "she was equal to his mum". Maybe he only saw his mum on tv, stamps etc... but seems unlikley
Radio in the car is off. Television programmes are off. I’m avoiding the big news websites on the internet.
It’s all a bit meh to me. As callous as it may sound, I really don’t care about the Queen’s passing. I would place a bet that very few people in Wales care, or even want a monarchy, certainly amongst the people I know, and that includes the older generation with which you would normally think would be in favour of the Royals.
I don’t like the fact that it’s around the clock coverage by the usual suspects (BBC etc), but you can avoid it if you want.
The country shouldn’t come to a standstill over it (football cancelled etc). From what I have seen, the media reporting of a country in mourning is far from accurate.

I'm not sure what point you're making, Winston. I acknowledged in my OP, with remarks about Diana's death, that this is not a new phenomenon. I'm not expressing surprise. I'm saying I find it quite jarring (and always have) that our public discourse slips in such a disciplined way into a singular narrative which is plainly artificial.
You have clarified that you do not find it jarring, so we know where we stand, which means we will not need to discuss the question more extensively.
Seems you've missed my point RR, so I'll leave you to it.

Can you think of an occasion when this has happened and you haven’t found it jarring?
Best article I've read on here for quite some time. Not disparaging but honest. I'm with you on the collective sense of mourning we're all forced to feel. I just find it all so bizarre. You're right, there is a huge disconnect between how the media think we feel and how we actually feel about her passing. At most it's a footnote in our daily lives yet apparently we're drowning in a sea of tears.
I'm just going to avoid tv for a while.
It’s been a bit weird tbh, my Mum (and her family) are Irish Catholics from Glasgow and never had much love for the Queen or the monarchy generally.
My Dad’s from St. Kitts and Nevis (former British colony) and absolutely loves them, he was born in the same year as King Charles and is named after him.
I’ve always been a bit “meh” about them, I respect that they’re important to some people and have given some sense of continuity, but I also find it weird when people have been describing her as “like a mother to me” like, wtf are you talking about?
I don’t know, weird times indeed.
Wow
There are some really butthurt people that there is importance being placed on the death of the queen.
Get over yourselves. Feck me.
The only thing I don't understand is the cancellation of amateur games, but I think that is just amateur FA following suite.

It's an interesting, I wouldn't call it strange, social phenomenon. Media exaggeration is also nothing new. I agree that very few people are actually grieving.
What could also be described as interesting is the response to the response? Just look at some of the comments/articles made on the day of her death or today.
I think when you think about it, it's not really strange at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess 'strange' is subjective. For me it's deeply weird the way media outlets drop what objectivity they may usually possess and switch to a sort of ceremonial voice. For people who have lived in authoritarian states / under a cult of personality, I suppose this would feel familiar rather than strange. I know it's not a uniquely British phenomenon, though the way it intersects with the monarchy is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it was only last week Emily Maitlis spoke about the BBC being hamstrung by the need to be impartial yet here we are watching endless tributes. Where's the balance here? Where are those speaking of their indifference to the news? Impartiality disappears in circumstances like this. I understand why as they want to filter out any negativity but the problem is that because the media coverage massively overplays the sense of grief, it then informs how others should behave. The Premier League cancelling this weekend's fixtures has as more to do with the media's sense of inflated grief than it does any rational thought.
I feel a bit sad, not because I should, just feel that it's the end of an era and she came across as a very decent human being. I can't imagine it'll ever be the same. I don't much care for King (feels weird saying it) Charles and the less said about the fiddler of young uns the better

It's like those people that moan about their sh!tty jobs endlessly but 5 years later they're still there, at that same job.
Moral of the story, stop watching the fecking media.

I think the reason for this article is to point out the inaccuracies of the media reporting. This is a problem as the media should really be reporting the truth rather than their version of it.
The importance of the death of the Queen is different for everybody, but to me, as a Welshman, having the monarchy of a foreign territory forced upon us, and then being “expected” to care when one of them dies is ridiculous.
I neither care for, nor want, the royal family.

Maybe get away from it all by watching Spurs play tomorrow or even go to a comedy gig I've got tickets for midweek but do you know what, I can't because everyone assumed we're all consumed by grief and can't possibly enjoy anything other than wailing in a pool of tears.
I'd love to be able to do other things but those avenues are closed off. That's the entire argument, you fool.

But it’s just a traditional approach to a head of states passing.
Arguably outdated, but still to be taken in the context intended.

Perhaps, Winston, you're fixating too much on the single word 'mourning'. I'm speaking more generally about a disjunction between the tone of the media and the tone of all the private individuals around me, and the omerta, which I find peculiar, in which the national discourse will not acknowledge this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It would be completely unacceptable for the media to take a more ‘common’ line on this to fit in with what is happening amongst the general public, as well you know.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure what point you're making, Winston.

If you don't understand the cancellation of amateur games then in principle it's no different to those of us that wanted the Premier League to continue. It's no different.

You've banged on about "media coverage" for hours.
I haven't seen any media coverage on the queen, do you know why?
Because I ain't sat doing fack all watching the media.
Get off ye ars3 and do something that isnt going to wind you up. Jesus wept.
Do you know what I love?
I love the people that complain about stuff but do NOTHING to help themselves get away from the thing they're complaining about.

I haven't even got the tv on mate. I'm working from home at my desk.
Do you know what I'd love to do? Maybe get away from it all by watching Spurs play tomorrow or even go to a comedy gig I've got tickets for midweek but do you know what, I can't because everyone assumed we're all consumed by grief and can't possibly enjoy anything other than wailing in a pool of tears.
I'd love to be able to do other things but those avenues are closed off. That's the entire argument, you fool.
