I doubt the monarchy will survive in its current guise for much longer. A lot of people genuinely care about the Kardashians than the royal family which brings me to the point of the OP. The narrative structure which exists in the UK (not so much here in Oz as no one really cares that much about the Queen dying even though she was very popular with the older generation as her visits here were blockbuster) is designed to almost gaslight you into believing you have to feel a certain way or else you’re a narrative traitor.
Most people back in the UK I spoke to yesterday all pretty much said the same thing when i asked why they were sad about the queen dying and it all along the lines of ‘because she represented tradition’.
I truly believe the UK, possibly more than any other country I’ve been to is obsessed with the past and finds it very difficult to look forwards and the queen was a warm bath of nostalgia for many. But I’m certain that if Kim Kardashian died yesterday many many more of the younger generation of brits would be disconsolate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sad the barmy army can't sing 'God Save Your Gracious Queen' down under anymore. Still, God Save Your Gracious King has a bit of a ring to it as well.
But I’m certain that if Kim Kardashian died yesterday many many more of the younger generation of brits would be disconsolate.

I can say all this as someone who doesn't believe that inherited monarchy is the best way to run a democratic society.
----------------------------------
The monarchy don't run this democratic society!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Monarchy has no place in a fully democratic society.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It does have if people want it to have. It isn't your decision
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s not fully democratic if the monarchy exists.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course it is, if the people want it's democracy in action
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s not. A fully democratic system doesn’t have a monarchy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Explain why. It's no good just saying it
Because a hereditary monarchy is by definition undemocratic. The people don’t have a choice in who the head of state is.

Fair point. I suspect if they were asked to vote on it a huge number of people would bafflingly opt to continue to pay money in taxation from their hard earned wages to keep the car wavers. Serfs.
But the populace don’t have the ability to choose who that monarch is. That’s why monarchies are undemocratic. This shouldn’t need explaining.

Indeed. Because we don’t really live in a proper democracy. Parliament also has a house that isn’t democratically elected. And the first past the post system isn’t very democratic either.

Some of the comments in this article have a hint of jealousy in them, because they were not the ones to be born into royalty, not the ones to be born and live in the spotlight.
Is it not slightly similar to being the child of a massive celebrity?
A child that hasn't worked their way up, they were born into wealth and given opportunities that normal folk would never get in most circumstances.
See will Smith's kid Jaden for example, horrendous actor and 'rapper' but still rakes in the money probably, only reason he's there is because of his parents.
