My main issue with the Royals is the perception that somehow they're 'better' than us plebs just becauae of the family they're born into.

Our children have an opportunity (albeit small)to become leading sports starts, rock stars, scientists, etc but we'll never ever be a head of state under the current system.

In 2022 when equality is rightly an important topic the idea we should fawn a defer to any single family is wrong IMO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You don't have to fawn Diafol, and I don't suppose you have.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've not. It's a bit sad someone has died but I'd be much sadder if it was one of you here. You actually bring something into my life!

France generates the most tourism revenue in Europe and they haven't had a monarchy since 1792. There's no correlation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
People come to France for the weather, coast, scenery, food, Paris. While there they swing by Versailles
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are dozens of reasons France is the most visited country on the planet and it's not because they got rid of their monarchy hundreds of years ago.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which just proves the false equivalence that tourists visit the UK because we have a monarchy
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think anybody actually visits the UK just because the UK has a monarchy. Neither would they if the UK didnt have a monarchy.

However, like in France, you would have to be daft to think that our cultures and histories and all that offers and implies for tourists are not sometimes a deciding factor to visit by some/many people.

Not really, because in all seriousness, France is a much nicer place with more things to do and see than England. Hence the tourism numbers.

So we agree that tourist revenues in the UK wouldn't decline if we didn't have a monarchy

you might be right. I'm a massive Francophile and spend a lot of time in France.... but it really depends where you visit in France or UK.

I could advise you with a long list of chitholes to avoid in both France and UK whilst on your holidays.

Absolutely. Because like in France, the histories have already been made. Its just how well you sell them to tourists that makes the tills go kerching. The French sell their imperial history in and around Paris (as to the Russians in St Petersberg)) incredibly well.

As mentioned earlier - tourist revenues will likely increase.

For example Buckingham Palace is only open to visitors 10 weeks a year at £30 a ticket.

Imagine opening it up for 52 weeks.

We could really sweat these assets (once the squatters are out).

good example right now live on BBC TV.

Many US and Japanese tourists would sell their own grandmothers to witness the grand pageantry that is going on in London right now. And this is all because we HAVE a monarchy.

Nicola Sturgeon and that welsh bloke all part of it, too.

Japan still having an Emperor and the world's oldest monarchy might explain their interest.

Didn't the US fight to get rid of us and our monarchy? Don't see them rushing to institute one of their own.

I guarantee the UK would have even more tourists if they could go in the palaces and see what was once a royal family history. There’s no place for royalty in 2022

You honestly think there would be less tourists if Buckingham Palace was open to tourists?

The French do very well without a royal family and opening up their palaces for the world to see. There’s really no need for a British Royal family to exist other than to placate insecure British people who worry they won’t have anything to be proud of. Look forward, not back - or else things like Brexit happen

Now that Charles is King, there appears to be a vacancy for the position of the Prince of Wales. Happy to do it if there are no other takers.

I'm serious. Based on figures from 2021 for this role, it was £22 million pay for 11 weeks full time equivalent.

Just an hourly rate of £57,000 but I'll make do.

btw you would have to be daft to think that if they opened up Buck Palace to more to tourists that there would be less of them wanting to visit it. How you think anybody thinks otherwise is actually crazy.

Tourists come to Scotland because of the amazing scenery as well as the history. Are you essentially saying that England is a shiitehole but has the Monarchy so tourists go there and wouldn't if there was no Monarchy cos then it would just be a shiiitehole? For the most arrogant country in the world you sure lack self confidence. Maybe you could reinvent yourself like when teenagers leave school and go to uni. Could no longer be known as the shiitehole who has a queen. Now is a good time.

maybe King Charles should advertise in the Evening Standard for a Prince of Wales.

You seem coq sure he cant think of anybody to give the job too.

Yet.
