Gerrard would have been handy for cup games, he always seemed to raise his game for those one-offs, fair play to him. We'll never know if he had it in him to help drive his team to relentless title after title like Scholes did, one of the great what-ifs, I guess.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Would Scholes had driven Liverpool to a CL win? We'll never know!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We already know as Scholes has admitted he couldn't in the video in the OP.
Scholes is a known quitter. I'm sure even United fans know he couldn't have pulled off Istanbul but they can't bring themselves to state some facts outright and they are left with "ifs" and "buts".

I particularly like the rewriting of history where they claim Scholes quit England because he was played on the left when he was actually only played on the left three times, much fewer than how many times he played there for United. He quit as there were two better players ahead of him in his position.
A lot of people said that and blamed Sven for me quitting England, but the truth is I played on the wing for Man United too and scored a lot of goals. But it didn’t work out like that for England. I’m not sure why. The truth is I got on great with Sven. I don’t think there’s anyone who didn’t – we all loved playing for him. He put me in that position because he thought Frank and Steven were better suited to playing in the middle than me. It was his choice, and it wasn’t my business to tell him where I should play. He thought they were better than me.

Gerrard was not only the best midfielder but also the best no 10, best Right back etc as he outclassed the best players in those positions like Gar Neville when he was merely covering.
I mean, Gerrard is a better Right Back than Gary Neville, only that playing him at right back would have been a waste.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, it would have been a waste of Steve Finnan, who was a better RB than Gerrard. Or a waste of Josemi, who was also a better RB than Gerrard. Or a waste of Stephen Wright, who was..... you get the drift.
Isn't it widely accepted that continually playing Gerrard and Lampard was one of Sven's greatest failings and one of the main reasons for the Golden Generation's disappointment? Even leaving Scholes out of it altogether, I wouldn't be citing the Gerrard-Lampard midfield combo as the stamp of someone who really knew what they were doing. And there's no historical revisionism here: everybody was saying that at the time.
I can't believe* that a Liverpool wum article has wound up Liverpool fans so much
*Actually I can believe it
One thing I'll give Scholes credit for is being an honest chap.
Most players are proud twaaats and wouldn't openly admit their inferiority to another player like this.

He’s that angry he’s claiming WUM. Wow
Gerrard's legend is based really on that one match in Istanbul.
If you examine it closely though you'll see:
Italian clubs in the period were allegedly throwing games. What happened in that CL Final was Milan tried to keep it tight but even dropping down a few levels they still found themselves 3-0 up! This was a disaster for them. The money was all on the draw.
Therefore, in the second half they had to do something drastic so what they did was, to avoid too much suspicion, tell their keeper to have a mare for a few minutes. A Gerrard header (where Dida completely 'lost' his bearings and a mistake in letting in Smicer's shot later and it was prime time for a bit of famous Stevie G diving. Such the talismatic figure we was he let his (much better) fellow midfielder Alonso take the penalty. It was a poor penalty but Dida conveniently pushed it back into Alonso's path. The game was level! Now, surely, the momentum was all with Gerrard's side and they'd ride that to win the watch. Oh but they didn't. The game then settled down again and Milan, having learnt their lesson, were able to comfortably keep it level for the draw with no further drama.
It was then Dudek that won it for them with Gerrard playing no part in the shootout.

about 15 years ago this debate was so tiresome people on 606 used to just use the games as code.
