* they'd have walked through her army
Tbh, I don't see it as TNK was less important than Cersei - I see it as evening up the odds.
If Jon and Dany went to fight Cersei first then they'd have walked from her army in all probability. If nothing else, a decimated Jon & Dany army would lose to the TNK so they'd have needed to come out relatively unscathed to make the next battle in any way even.
What we have now is a victorious but hugely depleted Jon and Dany going up to face a untouched Cersei army. It makes the battles and outcome a lot less certain imo. Well, maybe not the outcome but certainly the path and the price to be paid.
I think they had to do it this way around.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Agreed. Ideally they'd have interweaved both storylines together but if they were gunna split them off it had to be this way round.
But then again I've got no problem with the finale being dedicated to Cersci. Of all the questionable writing that's been in GoT since S5, Cersci is the one character HBO's gotten right. You know for a fact she won't go down as easily as TNK did, not a chance in hell.
There must always be a Night King
I feel betrayed that i met my fate so early.
At least let me say a word or two!

After last weeks debacle of an episode, I emotionally disengaged with this series. But, I begrudgingly watched tonight because in poker terms I'm "pot committed" to this show. I actually found this episode depressingly hilarious.
Spoilers ahead. Just the lowlights. Whole episode is trash.
How do we not see the conversation between the Stark family?!?! This is soap opera level of writing. Such a huge moment for Jon's character; his "siblings" finally acknowledged him as their brother. Such a great set up knowing they are truly family/cousins and the pay off of this conversation hinges on the series biggest secret. He's the rightful heir. "Tell em Bran" cut scene. What? This was such a huge moment for main characters, how does this happen OFF SCREEN? And maybe they could have thrown in some more clarity on Bran while they were at it? Maybe make some sense of Brans role? Other than creepy cripple?
Is this goodbye to Bran? I hope so. Unfortunately. Such wasted potential of a character.
Can we please get a meme of Jamie walking away and Brianne crying to "toot it n boot it" Did anyone buy Brianne being Jamie's love? Him staying North? He Knights her. Nights her. Then dips out. Talk about a walk of shame.
I hate to say, but I think that's the last we see of ol Bronn. Just not enough time. Or maybe too much time, he might actually come to collect. From whomever. He does deserve it. He made it from Kings Landing to Winterfell in a world record pace of two days. Only for Dany to top that, and get from one to the other in two minutes. But who's counting? Not like the series had us believe traveling Westeros took seasons. Let's not go here. Ugh.
Who is letting Jon into war meetings? I mean really, who? And who is listening at this point?
Rest of the Dothraki? What? At this point I would have some major leadership concerns for the I guess remaining Dothraki?
Goodbye Tormund, may you find your Northern beauty while we say good bye to our comedic relief. Wait, when did GoT have a comedian? He made me smile and SMH at the same time. But he will be missed.
Sam goodbye too. Your vulnerability turned into eye rolling pity in two episodes. Not your fault. You gotta go though. Uninspired back to back goodbyes to genuine characters important to Jon.
Jon, can you please pet Ghost? For real! You just stand and brood at him? I get it, you're a brooder. Your brooding before Dany enters your room is an all time brood. Glad Ghost is headed North. You didn't deserve him.
I thought maybe for a second Varys was going to kill Tyrion over his loyalty to the realm. Or Tyrion over his loyalty to the mad Queen. Could have been cool, two of the shows biggest schemers and the death of a main character over a disagreement on who should rule? Almost classic GoT. Think about rewatching the series knowing that's how one of them ended? Nope. Soap opera drama. But maybe Varys knew Tyrion could not be killed? If that giant mast landing on his head rendering him unconscious in the water to float to shore alive didn't do it. My money is on Tyrion the Immortal.
So Dany mentions at the war meeting "my enemies grow stronger" but doesn't expect dragon defenses? When she knew Cerci already had them? I'm sure the dragon joy ride into enemy territory was Jon's war room idea. "Once we get there, take a joy ride, take in the country, you'll absolutely love it down South. Ask for Cerci."
Euron and his fleet are bulls eye with Raeghal. Boom. Boom. Boom. Night night dragon. Ugh. Then Dany flies on a straight line narrowly missed by a dead shot fleet. Common here. Really? Then Euron rolls through Danys fleet like target practice. Must have made some aiming tweaks between Raeghal and Danys fleet. Yeah that's it. And where was Yara? Probably morning Theons huge character redemption off screen.
And what do they do next?
Park your dragon in what appears to be within dragon killing range and barter for peace with 100 unsullied? The quick work those giant crossbows did to a dragon and fleet of ships and Cerci gets cold feet?
Cerci you had your chance to kill Tyrion and not owe Bronn. Maybe leverage Riverrun for another purpose? Who knows. All your debt to the Iron Bank. Might come in handy. Where was your vengeful bloodlust?
I could go on. But I digress. My watch has ended. This is botched. This will not end well. Our questions won't be answered. Our hunger for deep meaningful endings to what started as some of the best characters and arcs won't won't be satisfied. I'll never be able to rewatch this series. LOST anyone?
Good episode but still lots of flaws in the writing unfortunately.
Decent episode with a lot of flaws. Standard GoT post-S5 stuff, if you switch your brain off it's fine (which fits for me as a 2am viewer after a long work shift).
One big gripe I have, and this might just be me cos I've seen a lot of supporters of him, but the way Euron's portrayed on the show is SO annoying. If they wanna water him down from his book counterpart fine, you expect that from the show at some point, but if you do that getting the basics right like they did with Ramsey - charismatic, smart but barbaric and mentally stunted. The fact he's portrayed as some kind of warrior god in battle situations is bad enough, forced credibility writing, but he's lack of ambition and intelligence when it comes to Cersci is just awful. The writing of him's got to a point where the clever swerve would be to have him turn on Cersci for sympathetic reasons, the fact that's even an option that would hold up within the story just demonstrates how much HBO's butched his character.
I keep thinking euron is the singer from kasabian really puts me off
Still, looking forward to euron getting killed. Cersei really stepped up her credentials at being worse than the night king, the true enemy. She was always going to be, and deserves it.
Wtf were they thinking getting shot by the spears? If you are on a dragon in clear skies surely you stay high to survey the terrain and spot the boats coming in? Madness. What’s the point having a massive advantage like that if you don’t use it?
Pretty depressing episode really..
First thing i’d Is scout where the weak spots are in the dragon defence. Wait til it’s cloudy or night/bad weather drop in and destroy them all.
Don't those dragon defences now mean that Cersei will now win this war easily ?? We saw what those spear gun weapons did to a fleet of ships, absolutely obliterated them within minutes.
What army could stand in front of that ?? Cersei wins any upcoming battles with absolute ease if logic prevails. That last dragon will get taken down within seconds if it gets anywhere near King's Landing again. Game over.
Which makes Tyrion saying to Cersei that her reign as queen is over all the more laughable. What a pair the little fella has on him. He should be negotiating the terms of Daenerys's surrender and pleading that they're allowed to live.
Cersi had the chance to wipe them out there and then.
They should've extended for another season. Dedicated one to killing the Night King and another to the final battle with Cersei...would've allowed for proper writing even with less than 1hr episodes.
It does feel like they are rushing it. They just won the battle with the dead and then a day late of to Kings landings. Thats just unrealistic.
Dany always showed arrogance because of her dragons. Love that Euron sunk Rhaegal with relative ease and she bottled that battle on open water.
Missandei though
She always deserved more that what Dany gave her.
I'm not sure there's enough extended storyline for another season. In previous seasons there were always so many side stories to focus on to pad it out. Now we're down to the barebones characters and the main storyline.
Couldnt see the mass of ships and perfect aim for the first 3 shots
They could've flesh out the story more, with the incredible dialogues and scheming that made the show so intriguing, instead of the time skips we've been getting since S6.
The current season won't look out of place next the recent Fast & Furious movies.
Id say since season 5 personally
S5 was still okish even though there were hints of them losing the plot.
Since S6 was where is all unravelled.
As this series has seemed to veer into major soap opera terrirtory, Im betting on Dany winning the battle but going pretty mental and Jon then killing her in the throne room before going back oop north to live with the wildlings.
The naval scene really annoyed me, not only for the fact that the fleet was missed by the woman ON A DRAGON but by the boat crew on tyrions ship too (Some of the scenes had the boats in clear view of each other) .
