Dunno, there's no definitive answer to that, but when you have an American president refusing to condemn murder by white supremacists in Charlottesville, and a UK Prime Minister saying with impunity that women in burkas look like letterboxes it creates a climate of validation for a certain type of person. It's got to contribute.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The first example isn't really true. The second is British humour that gets muddled up with current social politics.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Come on, a guy literally drives into a group of people protesting,at a high speed , kill's 1,and the president says 'there's good people on both sides' wtf! He literally couldn't bring himself to even say that the hit and run guy was a nob.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not buying the British humour angle either. Were Ollie Robinson's tweets just British humour?

You can't have a climate where people can say what they want and apologists laugh it off as British humour or childish hi-jinks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Enfield and scousers, Little Britain and g@ys, that Lauren ch#v, etc. All Mickey taking over clothing choice.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So he’s out of the foreign sec job one month and he decided to go down the comedy route via an article in the Telegraph about banning a contentious religious piece of clothing.

Seems legit

Perhaps rephrase. Are the number of racists increasing?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know for sure but it feels like it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know if they're increasing, but their actions are being called out more frequently and publically now
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That is the biggest change I can think of, we're just calling it out more these days.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

There's little doubt the far right is on the rise both at home and abroad though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its been a period of right wing populism around the world, Trump, Johnson's government etc.

People get emboldened in climates like that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure about that. I think a lot of it has been overplayed, taken out of context and become a hollow narrative.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Such dreary trolling.

There's no way that things are worse than they were 10/15 years ago.

If you look at the mainstream support to stamp out racism it is obvious to see that we, as a society, have made massive strides and continue to do so which is something that we should be doing.

Bank of America donated 1 billion USD to BLM last year to help the cause along with many other corporations supporting the cause. There are many affirmative action programmes and trainings that are happening more and more now to help fight against racism as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I just said it FEELS worse than 10-15 years ago personally. There is a whole lot of posturing going on about supporting anti-racism but no-one is really doing anything about it. if anything, i think the media (papers) are fuelling the racists, daily, much more than 10-15 years ago.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It feels like the f*cking 70’s again.

I am not sure. 1 billion USD is a lot of money! That is quite a lot by anybody's standard.

Johnson's quote was in a serious piece about banning the veil / burka in Denmark and the implications of doing it in Britain, not a sketch show.

You might as well have quoted Love Thy Neighbour and Til Death Do Us Part as well, I don't think Little Britain would be doing the same gags these days.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure Johnson has done anything serious.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe would agree with this

And humour does offend people sometimes.

I read something about some country (nice and specific 😂) and a common phrase was along the lines of 'dont take offense to something that wasnt intended to be offensive'. Quite good I thought.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's a load of bull. First because people don't have to be offended when they react to anything. And who decides what the intention was? Am I supposed to take your word for it when you say you called me a paedo with good intentions?

Can’t say his sense of humour does the same. Then again I don’t buy the it’s all jolly japes justification. He’s made plenty of outright unequivocal racist things. He’s got a back catalogue FFS. It’s got nothing in common with Harry Enfield et al.

The biggest donators aren't just giving money to BLM, they're pledging to specific programmes. Apple ($100m), Walmart ($100m over 5 years), Google and Facebook ($12m and $10m) and lots of others around the $100k mark.

Its all good CSR for these companies as well.
