What you don't seem to realise is that the only way *significantly more powerful* colonists have been overthrown in modern history is via nonviolent revolutions. See India and Korea.

And who says they don't work? The threat of serious uprising and retaliation is the only thing keeping many entities from invading another. History shows it quickens independence but must be stopped once the oath to independence is clear, otherwise it becomes counterproductive. When occupiers look and see what it will take and all the bodies they'll be shipping home to achieve their aim, sometimes they just decide to go back home. See Vietnam.

Russia got their asses whooped out of Afghanistan by armed resistance, which was achieved by the USA backing and helping to spread and promote Islamist agenda and the act of terrorism, which later became the USA's worst enemy and the reason they can't leave the middle east alone.
