The irony of bringing up how long Israel can use the war as an excuse when you continually use the actions in the late 40s and 50s as the reason for terrorism acts on Israel.

Fact here is that until both sides put to bed what has gone before this doesn't end. It is the here and now that matters, not who got what land 70 years ago. A terrorist attack killing 1000+ people in one swoop sets this whole debacle back another 20 years, of that there is no doubt. The new generation of Israelis and Palestinians are now scarred from this latest mess. Rinse and repeat.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just months before the Hamas attacks, HRW published the following

"The Israeli military and border police forces are killing Palestinian children with virtually no recourse for accountability. Israeli forces should end the routine unlawful use of lethal force against Palestinians, including children. Israel’s allies should increase pressure to end the practice."

Not long before, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor published this:

"In 2022, the world saw a dramatic surge in killings of Palestinians, with fatalities in the West Bank climbing 82% from the previous year and nearly quintupling (491%) from 2020."

It's fair to say this generation was already scarred. There's no need to go back to the 1940s or 1950s to understand or explain that. You can't pretend the Hamas attacks happened in a vacuum.

Things don't only happen in Palestine when they're headline news.

KILLING OF PALESTINIANS UP 491% IN THREE YEARS BEFORE the Hamas attacks

Israeli forces should END THE ROUTINE UNLAWFUL USE OF LETHAL FORCE AGAINST Palestinians, including CHILDREN

Unfortunately, it seems that none of that is shocking enough to spark your outrage or capture your attention.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is just above your vehement condemnation of Hamas for their attack.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Incidentally I always skip over anything in capitals. It just means the author is shouting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1. I'm a bit thrown by your first comment. I don't know what comment you're referring to when you speak of my vehement condemnation, since I've done so several times on this thread.

In addition, the comment you replied was addressed to Cinci, so I'm even less sure of what you're hinting at.

2. You're old enough to know capitalisation has long been used for emphasis, more so in cases where other means such as bold type, italics or underscoring are unavailable. Your comment about skipping over capitalised text seems to be more about deflecting than actually addressing the issue. Since it wasn't addressed at you, you ought to have saved yourself the bother.

3. Not sure what you mean with your taking sides comment either. From where I'm sitting you seem to expend a lot more time and energy defending one of the sides yourself, and simply bat aside any arguments apportioning them their fair shame of the blame.

Unsurprising given the genocide. It’s still plenty when you consider how many remained. You can get hung up on the use of the word plenty if you want, but moving to Israel wasn’t the de facto position of large swathes of Jews after the Holocaust, when you look at what actually happened. And that’s before you consider that there was many that were pushed to move there for antisemitic reasons.

I’d love to know how many Jews in Israel descend from Europe originally. From my experience, I doubt there’s as many Jews that descend from Arab countries living there.

The Jews haven't been the majority faith in Palestine for at least 1,500 years.
_____________
The jews havent been the majority faith anywhere thats the point isnt it? they were exiled and persecuted ever since with no land/country to call their own despite being the first religion of its kind? Israel is the only Jewish state and look what that took to achieve and how long it took and the shocking events that had to happen for it to be so?

I have sympathy for both sides , i think its been handled poorly by all involved too. And ive said before its the innocent in it all that are suffering and have suffered from it all.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Israel is not a Jewish state. It is a Zionist state that hides behind Judaism whenever their barbaric methods are called into question.

Why are people still struggling to understand there is a difference between Zionism and Judaism?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is baaallacks, though. Of course it’s a Jewish state and Zionism is a core belief comes from Judaism. Just because Zionism isn’t a political ideology that all Jews support, doesn’t mean it’s not part of Jewish ideology.

Funny I was just reading about Sephardic Jews, and although the world population of Jews is about +/- 85% Ashkenazi but Sephardic Jews make up about 55% of Israel's population.
There are some weird/interesting stories about how and why Sephardic Jews decided to go to Israel.
Al Jazeera did a good series on it.
You can probably look it up in their archives.

Why is that the point, though? Why should any religion need to have a majority country of its own? Afaik (I could be mistaken), there are no Taoist states or Sikh states or Vodun states, all of which have more followers than Judaism.

Furthermore, what have the consequences been of religiously-motivated colonisation in recent centuries?

Genocide across the Americas and Apartheid in South Africa are two immediate examples that spring to mind.

It really doesn't seem a great idea for the people who lived on that land inhabited before being colonised. Did anyone ever expect the Arab Palestinians refused to roll over? Obviously not, it was probably just expected that they could easily be overcome by force.

Saw that Motaz was evacuated from Gaza. Kinda sad really, it’s exactly what Israel want. For the people of Gaza to leave ‘voluntarily’, and obviously less people broadcasting their brutal war crimes to the world.

After the son of that Al Jazeera journalist was killed, a lot of people on the ground have decided to hang up their cameras unfortunately

I was brought up in a Catholic family within a larger Jewish neighbourhood. We had perfectly normal, friendly relationships with our neighbours, we'd play at each others' houses and on the street, and share in each other's celebrations. I don't ever recall my parents having a bad word to say about Judaism or Jewish people, and they wouldn't have tolerated such attitudes in us either.

Having said that, there was most certainly an undercurrent of antisemitic discourse amongst the broader Catholic community and amongst the kids at the Catholic school I attended, so I was definitely exposed to that too as a child.

For that reason, I can't rule out the possibility that I might have subconsciously acquired an antisemitic bias, although I try to pay attention to it precisely for that reason. I therefore try to separate the broader community of Judaism from the narrower Zionist project that runs the State of Israel.

I don't think I can give a more honest assessment of myself than that. How about you? Have you asked yourself whether you might be Islamophobic?

I see your post on page 1 does take the Hamas attacks as a starting point of sorts, refusing to go back to the birth of the State of Israel, so allow me to reframe the issue without having to delve that deep into the past.

As per the reporting of independent human rights organisations (as per reports posted here), Israeli killings of Palestinians had risen almost 500% between 2020 and 2023. Most of those killed were civilians, and a large number of these were children. Your only reply to my stating those facts earlier in the thread was to dismiss them because they were capitalised, which is frankly nothing more than a bald deflection.

So, let me ask you again, what kind of Palestinian response would that 500% increase in killings have merited, in your opinion?
