Europe is still reliant on NATO for it's defence.
The U.S. is the biggest contributor to NATO.
Russia has threatened Ukraine with nuclear weapons.
How do people on here think Europe/E.U. would do in a war against Russia?

Honestly think they'd squash Russia in all out war, problem is nukes would start flying back and forth and Armageddon would come, at least for most of the northern hemisphere if not more.

BREAK: In a stunning blow to Israel & the US, the International Court of Justice has acknowledged a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza by refusing to dismiss South Africa's case.

The charge will now remain live for years. Initial analysis, more to come:

https://x.com/akbarsahmed/status/1750857492295188583?s=46&t=bPTrpdgNggCdz9igvhmVyw

Let’s see what the spineless UK and US governments have to say about this now
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They won’t do anything. ICJ is only credible in the West’s eyes when the victims are white.

I am interested to see what a lot of the EU governments have to say as they have all be sitting on the fence saying they would wait until the ICJ decided whether South Africa’s case was credible or not (as if they can’t use their own eyes to see what’s going on)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, ICJ is for disciplining African leaders who don't toe the line. The US isn't even a signatory I don't think, and with good reason because of they were their rap sheet would be light years long.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's closer to the truth. It isn't so much about the identity of the victims but of the perpetrators.

The U.S. isn't the entire West, although you'd be forgiven for thinking so given how infrequently Europe dares to step out of line.

Personally I couldn't care less if the UK are just the US's brown-nosers, Britain is increasingly irrelevant on the world stage through its own choice. The EU is the only chance Europe has of staying relevant, but we need to be more assertive and not fret so much about upsetting Uncle Sam.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Britain committing suicide in regards to international influence while still taking the same risks as before.

For starters I'm quite sure the U.S. controls British nuclear weapons. Actually scrap that. The U.K. leases Trident missiles from U.S. France have a few. Who else in Europe has any? Apart from that, nearly all NATO countries are or will be buying the Boeing F35 from... oh yeah U.S.A. let's not forget who has allies across the Sahel giving them access all that lovely uranium.

Take nukes out of the equation and the UK would destroy Russia in a war. Russia are a shambles and the UK is among the best.

I can see Putin agreeing to Queensbury rules and a game of cricket.

On a serious note Cinci is talking about the mighty UK (rule brittania!!) that let Russian agents to wander into our country and deploy biological weapons on UK.soil, twice.

What did our Gov do about it? Tell them were really cross and will slow down the money they've been laundering in the city and through property. Then our PM let a son of a former KGB spy into the House of Lords.

But yeah we'll show them if they agree no nukes

In some ways the advent of nuclear weapons have kept us safer than any point in recent history. It’s certainly stopped any more world wars after 1945.

posted on 27/1/24

I’m not sure that’s necessarily due to nuclear weapons existing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not completely but when superpowers can’t be invaded because they have access to nuclear weapons it takes away the possibility of major countries going to war.

The Cold War stayed cold because the consequences of nuclear weapons being used meant it just wasn’t worth it.

posted on 27/1/24

Not really, the Cold War stayed cold because it wasn’t in their interests to properly engage militarily with one another - they certainly wouldn’t have tried to invade each other. Eastern and Southern Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America would certainly dispute that nuclear weapons kept them safe.

Russia didn’t have the will to launch a full scale invasion of Western and Southern Europe after the war, nukes or otherwise. It’s why they played it out in the other regions mentioned.

And it shouldn’t need explaining that it’s an utterly irrelevant point to the discussion around Europe’s reliance on America when it comes to defence.

If the US left NATO tomorrow and then withdraw funding for Ukraine you’d think that the Baltic states would be next for Russia and they’d probably keep going west as far as Germany. Though that all depends I guess on how long Putin has left before he dies and the ambitions of his predecessor. A Putin of 20 years ago with a weakened NATO might well have done all that already
