I think immigration worries are valid and wont knock someone for that, but I just wish people could understand the situation a bit better than just the "build the wall / stop the boats" headline.

Just one example of hundreds... Climate change will drive immigration like never before, so putting someone into power that is sceptical (at best) is so short sighted.

"and they want the government to hear them loud and clear."

This is the truth, policy aside, it seems the general population don't have a voice anymore.

Exactly. Immigration and the economy were Trump's main arguments and, as one farmer put it to him: if you deport the undocumented farmers, who will do that job and what price will people be paying for food?

I think it's more to do with the economy than immigration - You look at most western democracies who have had elections post-covid. Pretty much most of them have been voted out / suffered greatly.

I don't think any government, or opposition party, regardless if left or right thinking, would have looked good post-covid, so if you happened to be the person in charge, you were screwed.

So if Trump has won in 2020 (and obv that would have been his 2nd term), the next Republican candidate would have struggled to win this election.

Whilst immigration is an issue, I truly believe it isn't a major issue for a lot people, whereas the economy always hits home

It’s not a surprise that no incumbent governments around Europe and the US have been given second chances post COVID. I’m expecting Germany to swing to the right next year when they have their election too. France next.

There are some real spiteful and nasty people in the world today, people are losing the core values left right and center.

The problem we have is the internet, back in the day it was called a soapbox. It is a platform for people to demand that they get listened to.

The best one I have had to put up with is that we all need to be more tolerant. What a load of rubbish.

The normal sane person which is 99% of us have always and will always be tolerant. But now we have people who think it is cool to be woke, or cool to be far left, just to show how "tolerant" they are, a sort of badge of honor. If you dare say something that they do not agree on, then you are a far right nut job.

Donald Trump should not be president of anything, not with his checkered past. But I have to say, I agree 100% with a lot of what he says. I have the same opinions towards Nigel Farage, I agree with a lot of what he says.

These people are saying what a lot of the normal sane people in our society are thinking. That is why people are voting for them.

Whatever you thoughts on Israel or Ukraine are your own thoughts, undoubtedly there is right and wrong on both sides. It does not make people right in what they say, and the insults that ensue from the debates are just spiteful.

I have this debate with a very good friend of mine, he is the leader of his church congregation. What he tells me sometimes is very poignant. I am sorry if you don't want to get embroiled in this, but I am going to tell you what he tells me anyway.

He tells me that Satan and is minions are winning and we cannot even see what is happening right in front of our eyes. The darkness is taking over. I asked him for examples, this is what he tells me:-

When was the last time you said hello to a stranger as you pass in the street ?

When was the last time you helped a pensioner cross the road ?

When was the last time you helped anyone with anything ?

When was the last time you prayed for someone other that yourself ?

When was the last time you prayed ?

When was the last time you put a stranger before yourself ?

I could go on. But you get my drift.

People who have voted for Donald Trump have done it, because the minority are drowning out the majority, Trump is not scared to speak his mind. Normal people are.

People will/have been arrested for speaking their minds, freedom of speech has gone, and nobody has noticed. Donald Trump after all the bad press did not do a bad job last time, what makes you all think he will do worse this time around ?

I apologies for the long ear chewing, and if you have taken the time to read all my droning, thanks.

It's not racist to be anti-immigration ffs. There are of course racists who are anti-immigration but not every person who is an immigration sceptic is racist ffs. Idiotic opinion.

Trump causes more danger to people outside of the US than he does to their own. I genuinely don't think the average American will be any worse off under him than they would be the Democrats. In fact some of their jobs could be argued to be more secure under Trump i.e. steel workers etc.

It's the impact he could have on the middle east conflict and Russia / Ukraine that has me concerned.

I saw some MAGA guy on YT saying that the best thing about Trump winning is being able to drink the celeb liberal tears. There's also a clip of julia Hartley brewer on Talktv effectively saying the same thing. That explanation kind of says everything.

Firstly, it says that politics has become as tribal as sport like how when Arsenal lose and people hate watch AFTV - This is now happening with real life politics.

But the bit that really gets me is him saying that's the best thing about it - it speaks volumes about what a Trump presidency actually stands for, and the mindset of a Trump voter.

OP - I'd argue that alarmist scapegoating of immigration and grossly exaggerating the impact it has on the material conditions of the country is a far bigger political factor than 'immigration' itself in substantive terms. When you poll citizens on their views on concrete realities, they tend to be far more pro-immigration and pro-immigrant than they are when the questions are framed more abstractly around how we feel about being overwhelmed by uncontrolled inflows. At a basic level, you see this in people who say they want migrants deported, but when you ask about the migrants who are working (very hard on low wages) in their neighbourhood, it very quickly turns to "no, not those ones".

It's also notable that in most countries where anti-immigration policy is a big vote winner, it is the districts with the fewest immigrants that these messages are most popular.

As for Busby's claim that "the general population don't have a voice anymore" on this issue, every major democracy in the developed world has political parties competing in free elections whose primary policy proposal is drastic action to curb or end immigration. Two of the last three Presidential elections have been won by the most radically anti-migrant national candidate in living memory, and every time Trump has stood, his Democratic rival has also emphasised the importance of reducing illegal border crossings. This year's UK election saw the Tories and Reform offer two platforms that are pushing toward leaving international human rights conventions in order to maximise our power to prevent people from entering the country illegally (while also committing to reduce the numbers entering legally). The winning Labour party largely accepted the framing of the immigration debate along the lines of stopping the boats and reducing net migration, only without the overt racism and authoritarianism. Only the marginal parties of the centre and left and the Scottish and Welsh nationalist parties offered a liberal view of migration as something that can have positive impacts as well as creating problems.

In what world do ordinary people have no voice in this?
