Ah, i thought your 'Did I stutter' was a quote from a film called Manace 2 Society. My response was the next line in the film. It appears I was mistaken.
We can always pretend I do know what you are talking about
Or maybe you could do the right thing and watch the film?

I find that some form of African dance in the car park tends to work for me.
So how did Liverpool manage to do well in other seasons Alonso was rubbish? Liverpool still won the fa cup and reached cl final..
------------------------------------------------
Alonso still had good games in the other seasons
05/06 and 08/09 were the ones where he really played well generally and those were the seasons where Liverpool played well generally.
As soon as he left it was went pear-shaped, the reason is that he was the real source for the team, finding Gerrard and Torres in space, releasing full-backs higher up the pitch, basically just consistently finding forward passes despite playing deep enough to help the defensive organisation.
A world-class player and the centre-piece of Liverpool best Premier League effort (despite Gerrard taking all the plaudits).
We then have the fact that some of the awards are exactly the same such as coming third in the ballon d'or.
---
Only, if you look closely, Xavi's awards clearly outnumber Gerrard's.
3rd place WPOTY and/or Ballon d'Or 4 times to Gerrard's 1.
Voted to the FIFA/FIFPro and UEFA XIs 4 times each, to 3 for Gerrard.
World Cup XI once, to none for SG
Euro Team of the Tournament twice, vs 1
Euro Player of the Tournament once
The only notable int'l accolade Gerrard won that Xavi didn't was UEFA Club Player of the Year (second to Messi last year).
That said, Xavi's had a clear advantage in that he's played for the history-making Barça and Spain sides. Gerrard's never had that sort of luck.
If a team could set a quick tempo, a peak Gerrard is a near perfect player to be box to box.
Energy, tackling, desire, off the ball movement, crisp passing, goals from inside or outside the box, even crosses on the overlap.
What Gerrard lacks is playmaking skills, subtlety (give him a good partner and he probably wont need those) and most importantly discipline. A peak Gerrard would have ran riot playing for United in the 90's IMO.
Alonso still had good games in the other seasons
=======================================
No he only two good seasons. I know Alonso far more than you
05/06 he was ok (but kept getting injured)
06/07 he was average (kept getting injured as well)
07/08 he was awful
He was good in 04/05 and 08/09

Alonso:
04/05 Appearances 32
05/06 Appearances 53
06/07 Appearances 51.
But you know Alonso 'far' more than me.
His two seasons were 05/06 and 08/09.
Fascinating debate this.
Zidane is the best player on the list but he definitely played in a more advanced role for the Great Juventus team of the 90's and RMadrid. Edgar Davids must be on this list! Absolute beast at his best, as well as Michael Essien and Yaya Toure.
Xavi, Scholes, Iniesta and Pirlo are the prime midfielders of the modern era, all greats, what a shame we will never get to see them 4 all together in a midfield diamond shape, no team would ever get the ball back!
The one player who really impresses me though is Seedorf, underrated, very intelligent player, could and maybe should have won even more, but the guy still won 4 European Cups with 3 different clubs, an astonishing feat.

Fantastic player, very intelligent too, he was playing a more withdrawn role for AC before he left and he excelled in it.
His two seasons were 05/06 and 08/09.
====================================
Erm noo..
His two good seasons where when we won the CL and when we finished second. I actually watched him and know what I'm talking about. You're trying to basing your opinion of number of starts
His first and last seasons were his best. The rest he was average.
His performance in FA cup 2006 sums up his performance in 05/06 season.

so in years when 'he was crap' it was really just recovery from injury IMO
he was of the same quality throughout when match fit
----------------------------
Redconn, do you feel Rafa used Torres when he was half fit and thus ultimately caused his drop in form once he left the club?
You missed the other 'i' in Patrick Vieira!
Alfredo Di Stefano could arguably classed as a central midfielder given how deep he played, often picking up the ball from his keeper on the edge of the area.
If not it has to be between Platini, Bobby Charlton and Michael Laudrup x

Alonso's first and last seasons were his best. He was above average in the other seasons and below average in the season before last.

------------------------
If I may.
No not really. In fact we let him finish the season early so he could get fit for Spain by having an operation. We did everything for him that he wanted but he played constantly for nearly 3 seasons on the back of being a first team player from the age of 17.
On the Gerrard creativity point do people know that the Gerrard/Torres statistically created the most goals in LFC history. More than Toshack/Keegan. More than Dalglish/Rush. If Torres was scoring them then someone was setting him up.

Completely agree with you. Just trying to draw attention to the fact that many awarding bodies back up my claim that for a good few reasons he was regarded as World class.
