I'm at the point where I wouldn't even want to drive an automatic car as it feels so wrong. It's like driving a go-kart
...................
If you drove in a large city day in day out you would be the opposite.
Once you drive an auto, you would never go back to a gear.
--------------------------
I'm the opposite. I started automatic but once I drove manual I could never go back. Every now and then I'll find myself using an automatic car again but it's just not the same.
And it's not that difficult to eat/drink/text while driving stick. You just go no hands on the wheel for a second while you switch gears
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I basically drive with one hand anyway in a manual, one hand on the wheel the other on the gear stick, in a manual you can adjust the gear to reflect the speed you are going at, say going around a corner and you come out at 30 mph you can pop it into 3rd and accelerate quickly then get into 4th, having a machine do that for you simply slows you down.
Anyone who says it's easier to drive an automatic is just a crap driver
............
Anyone who says it isn't is a liar.
One problem with reverse in a manual - in hire cars is the position of reverse is different in cars...
Put it in "6th/8th" a couple of times and stalled it

It is certainly more difficult than doing it in an auto.
--------------------------
True, but the easiness of automatics isn't enough of a benefit for me to prefer them. It takes any fun out of driving (what little fun there is), you have less control in harsh conditions, and get lower gas mileage.
Plus the birds all love a guy that knows how to handle a manual transmission real well <>

Why lazy kneersash?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It jsut is Vidic the car does all the work, it's like one of those electric childrens cars, it's just as easy to eat/drink and for me smoke while driving a manual. Plus you're in complete control of the car at all times.
having a machine do that for you simply slows you down
------
Depends in the machine
Stalled 40 times?
I've had a full licence since 87 and haven't stalled cars more than about 5 times
Exactly.

On an auto you don't have a hand on a gear stick. That hand is free all the time.

I was referring to the point about accelerating, which is the main point I've been making throughout this thread.
It's all subjective of course but I wouldn't consider someone who drive an automatic and is unable to drive a manual as a good or proper driver.
Never knew manual drivers hate auto cars so much
It jsut is Vidic the car does all the work
................
Why is that lazy?
If you are doing a 130 mile round trip commute that involves 45 minutes of city driving, believe me, I will opt for what is easier.
Each to their own I guess.
I was referring to the point about accelerating, which is the main point I've been making throughout this thread.
.........
That can depend on your car.

It can depend, but it usually doesn't.
Of course, if you have a top of the range automatic and an old banger of a manual the automatic will accelerate faster.
But if you take a two cars of the same standard, the manual will always accelerate faster.
Arab considering you clearly use tampons i think an automatic will suit you.
The wife picked her new 1 series M sport up on Saturday and you should see the fun I've had explaining to her how cruise control works, sometimes things which are designed to make driving easier have the opposite effect.

--------------------------------
The ease is such a small difference for me though. Instead of changing gears on my way to work and using both feet, I could use one and keep both hands on the wheel instead of just one.
That's the only positive and considering I drive without thinking most of the time, it's not a huge one

I will bet it is because most of them haven't driven one.
I drove manual from the age of 18 through about 38. Easy enough and not a problem.
Once I got in an Auto, that was it. Life was far easier.
Anyone who says driving a manual is easier either hasn't driven an auto, or he is lying.

But what are you really doign with that free hand eh?
Vidic is right it's each to their own and I know plenty of taxi drivers would prefer to drive an automatic, I just think that after learning and struggling to master the clutch, when you do master it it's a great feeling of control and it's what I associate driving with being in complete control of all aspects of your car.
