Well I don't know what car you drive VC, but i'd wager if you were side by side with the same car as yours but a manual, it would leave you behind in a race.
...........................
Not in the first two or three hundred yards that is for certain.
Unless I was up against the Stig, maybe.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Come on VC, give it up. It's well known that manual cars accelerate faster. I wouldn't base my opinion on the bunch of incompetents who can't properly pull away from traffic lights.
I've 2 cupholders in the little space between the gearstick and the dashboard, it's very easy to drive and drink coffee, sure I roll smokes while driving a manual, that can be a little tricky but I do it all the time. you can achieve allot in those 30 seconds stopped at a red light

You need to invest in a car with cupholders
...........
So, are you saying you have to put your coffee in a cup holder when you change gears?
Well that is inconvenient. Very inconvenient in a city.
Autos also have cup holders by the way, Mr C.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, the coffee is always in the cup holder except for when I want to take a drink. After I do, it returns to the cupholder. Why would you want to hold it permanently?
You can hold a cup in your hand and change gears with your wrist you know?
Also cruise control works better in automatics.. reason being you can just hit resume, whereas this feature is fairly redundant in a manual.
Auto's are for women and old people.

I've mastered making rollies while driving, make a little crease in your trousers where you can put the rizla, filter and baccy and when it's all lined up quickly pick it up, take your hands off the wheel and roll
In an automatic, when you put your foot down, the car will change gear at the soonest possible moment, whereas the driver of the manual can stay in lower gears longer and accelerate quicker
.............
I guess autos are totally different in the UK to the US then, because that isn't how mine works.
While a gear stick is having that pause inbetween gear changes the auto doesn't.
Thus why I hate being behind a manual car at trafic light so much.
Vidic what litre engine do you drive? You live in America yeah?

Risk of spillage. Much better to just leave it in the cupholder as described above

Yes, changing gears in a manual takes marginally longer, but you can stay in lower gears for as long as you want, hence accelerate faster.
It's simply to do with revs.

Yeah that's the way I do it too, do us manual lovers (pun intended ) have a unique way of drinking coffee too???
Youre missing our on that oh so satisfying feeling of switching from 3rd to 4th if you drive auto
Seriously though, I've never driven an auto. Id like to try it soon.

Lets assume you are not stuipid.
Ok, you want to take a drink, the car in front of you breaks, you have to change down a gear. Coffee has to go back into the cup holder.
Not so with an auto. Just carry on drinking.
Easy really.

Lift to mouth, tip cup to point where coffee enters mouth, take drink, tilt cup back to horizontal, return cup to cupholder.
I guess autos are totally different in the UK to the US then, because that isn't how mine works.

------------------------
How does yours work because I'm fairly certain that's how automatic cars are built to operate?
And the pause in between gear changes can be minimized to basically nothing when you're a decent manual driver. It's just those grannies that have to take 5 seconds to change gear and don't accelerate during that time.
Just floor an anutomatic car and you can feel the little shudder when it changes gear, in a manual you can learn to do it better than the car can.
How many of you can text on an iphone whilst driving a manual. That takes skill.
