Why would you want to drink coffee whilst driving anyway.
...........
Well, it is all about staying awake at 5 o'clock in the morning, for me.
That, and I like coffee.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh right. In my country its tradtional to drink coffee only at meal times.

I couldn't get out of bed in the morning without knowing I can get my coffee fix shortly after
Spot on, I can be driving in 5th and slow down to a stop with the clutch in without using my hands at all. The only time you need to change out of 5th would be to start moving again
................
So you either change or stall yes?

You mean while you're stopped? Yes, you change back into 1st during the time you're sitting waiting for the car in front of you to move.
It's not that difficult

No. During the time you are clutching+braking, in order to prevent crashing into the car in front, you put the cup in the cup holder. When this is done, you can change and carry on.

VC, you often berate people for not grasping quite simple things but it seems you don't get this. Fair enough, you prefer your manual car, probably because you are "older" but all we are saying is that it is not difficult to drive a manual and drink coffee without having an accident every time someone in front slows down.
Manual cars generally last longer as well

Exactly. I've never spilled a drink while driving and the only time I've ever been in an accident was back when I drove automatic. Not to mention most the time I drive around with an iPhone in my hand hardly paying attention to the road, so it's really not a hassle at all to drive manual
RVP if you decide to get an Auto, remember, left foot for break and right for accelerate.
I think this is best left as an "each to their own" ending! Pretty staunch support on either side...

I guess autos are totally different in the UK to the US then, because that isn't how mine works.
While a gear stick is having that pause inbetween gear changes the auto doesn't.
------------------------
How does yours work because I'm fairly certain that's how automatic cars are built to operate?
And the pause in between gear changes can be minimized to basically nothing when you're a decent manual driver. It's just those grannies that have to take 5 seconds to change gear and don't accelerate during that time.
Just floor an anutomatic car and you can feel the little shudder when it changes gear, in a manual you can learn to do it better than the car can.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I used to hate autos. But if you get a good new model, then it's surprisingly good. I never owned an auto until just over a year ago, and it's awesome. A modern auto box is smooth as you like, and changes gear faster than a manual can. Also the economy is very good. Drop it into Sport and hoon away. (Ok, not so economical then!)
Let's just end it and say automatic cars are easier to drive, so usually a preference for old people, women, and beginning drivers.
It's like riding a bike with training wheels on or swimming with arm floaties.
The right foot is the left foot for the clutching alright
I'd have used right foot for both pedals to be fair, I rarely use my left foot except with the clutch
You don't have to change gear to stop
I'll probably end up buying a manual car anyway and I'll hopefully end up braking and reversing properly. Some of the points made on manual cars in the thread are good
Ruiney be honest, you drive around in 1st gear dont you, drinking your ribena

My instructor tells me to change to first or second gear when I stop
Whatever your instructor teaches you, you end up doing the complete opposite the moment you pass your test
RVP wow your instructor by changing from 2nd to 4th
