Just noticed, De La Pena is the OP on gas?

De La Pena was amazing when he played for Barcelona. Often he dominated us when we played against Barca.

not to mention LED us to the Champs lge trophy...

Didi Hamann did as much as anyone on the pitch for me.
I asked what they said.
Professionals often give opinions so as not to be controversial. If the interviewer goes 'is gerrard world class' they are not going to be rude and say no. Let me see the quotes first.
And they named a position after him
Matthaus, now there's a player. Would put the likes of Gerrard, Keane and Viera them to bed in his day.
From Fergie;
"He has become the most influential player in England, bar none. Not that Vieira lacks anything, but Gerrard does more," Ferguson told the Sunday Times.
"To me, Gerrard is Keane. He is where Keane was when Roy came to us in 1993. Everywhere the ball is, he is there."
Ferguson would not be drawn on whether he would consider bidding for Gerrard, merely commenting that such a transfer would be "complicated".
But the Scot said any team in the world would like to have Gerrard in their team.
"He's got that unbelievable engine, desire, determination. Anyone would take Gerrard," he said.

From Zidane;
Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of [Lionel] Messi and Ronaldo but, yes, I think he just might be," Zidane said. "If you don't have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team.
"When we were winning league titles and European Cups at Real, I always said Claude Makelele was our most important player. There is no way myself, [Luis] Figo or Raúl would have been able to do what we did without Claude and the same goes for Liverpool and Gerrard.
"He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly he gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can't learn that – players like him are just born with that presence."
But scholes is better than gerrard
All hail Biscan, lord of the underverse!!!

Not throughout the whole tournament he didnt...
Ok, I agree. Missed the part where he said Gerrard was one of the best ever.

Zizou and Claude, winners by knockout.

Not for me he wasn't. He was technically solid, but not much more than that. However, what he lacked in ability he made up for in sheer guts and determination. Through his attitude he managed to step up from being a very good CM to an excellent CM - but I still don't believe that he had the technical ability to be world class. Although, he did have the ability to alter the pace of a game in the way that Gerrard has never really demonstrated. He wasn't as good as Scholes at doing that, but he did have a decent understanding of when to sit and be patient and when to go for the throat. Him and Scholes together were a perfect combination.

Yes because of the home grown rule which ruined any English hope in Europe. He had what, 2 good seasons? Not in the same league as your Zizous or Xavis I'm afraid.
As I thought...
'Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of [Lionel] Messi and Ronaldo but, yes, I think he just might be'
The interview asks him the question. Zidane responds by saying 'he just might be' so as not to be rude.

Schole got to play with Giggs, Keane, Beckham and RvN.
Gerrard had to play with Smicer, Kewell and Baros.
If you don't think that makes a difference you should be on the netball board.
Not sure Keane, Ballack, Gerrard, Alonso, Deco, Juninho, Lampard, Cesc, and De La Pena belong on a 'best CM's of all time' list. All good players, no doubt, but not ATG's.

Of course not i didnt state he was. Nevertheless a fine player who could pass, shield the back four and had a great engine. Kind of like the player we could do with right now in our midfield.
Wooooah Zidane just said he was better than Ronaldo or Messi
I think that invalidates his opinion, no?

You're an idiot.
If you're talking great midfielders I'd have to include some of the Liverpool players from the mid/late 80's.
Ronnie Whelan, Steve McMahon, Jan Molby
and I tell you a massively underrated player - although of course not for one moment one of the greatest - but a very talented midfielder was Nigel Spackman. Completely under the radar that lad
